It's 1925 and you are in the market for a basic electric train. Set #1102 in the American Flyer catalog appeals to you
so you order it up...and this is what you get

Nothing much new for me. Just been working on my stretched 265E. It's up on the high line running light in the buff...

Was just looking at the Stout auction tomorrow. Wow, target rich environment for tinplate hunters. If only.......
Yeah, and I live in Lafayette not far from the Indiana Stout auctions... never been but man is it tempting... I'd probably get into a lot of trouble

American Flyer Trains, any gauge and any age, will always be my first love in collecting. However, I have a fondness for any toy train. Reading this column weekly has also helped me to develop an interest in the "Toy Trains of Other Lands". Thankfully I have been able to resist acquiring any of them - so far .
I do have examples of other brands of trains including Ives, Marx and Lionel. I started acquiring some Ives pieces because I wanted to have some examples of American Flyer's contemporary manufacturers. I should have known better. I have the collector gene, I am an amateur historian, I like to have "completeness", and I like to teach . I have found that to be a very dangerous combination. Once the brand barrier is broken I just continue to add "examples". I hope to have a toy train museum some day; in the basement, or in a larger train room, or perhaps a separate building. A guy has to have dreams and goals you know.
My desire to have some examples of Ives started with a freight car or two. It didn't take long until I had to have a representative train:
At the same time I was doing research about Ives (and buying books). I discovered that Ives had only had the short caboose to use on their trains, until the joint bankruptcy purchase by American Flyer and Lionel.
With the take over, the Ives Railway Lines got a 9 1/2" caboose to go with its longer freight cars.
An American Flyer 3211
disguised as an Ives 121
So now my Ives freight train had an appropriately long caboose.
If you have followed this thread for a while you know I didn't stop there and there are photos of the Ives portion of my collection scattered among the weekly threads. In fact I just purchased another Ives engine that will make its debut here on the thread in the future.
Thanks to all of you who post photos of your trains. At least I can do some of my collecting vicariously, and its great to know that there are others who enjoy their hobby as much as I do.
Have a Great Tinplate Weekend.

Purchased this loco this week, which I believe to be a customized Flyer 3112 box cab. Roof, frame and motor all seem to be Flyer. Note porthole windows and oversized vents. It runs, but can't wait to open it up and see what's inside. Headlight has to be fixed anyway.
Looks sort of like Hornby or JeP BB-8101.

GREAT TRAINS, everyone! - Please keep 'em coming, and THANKS for sharing with this vicarious "collector"! :-)
Andy,
Love the early AF stuff, it's just great.
The building of our Train room is coming along, when the new battery charger for my Camera comes in, I will take more picture.

Tell me about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Greg, i always enjoy your posts on American Flyer, they are always so instructives. It would be a great pleasure to visit an AF museum, with some Ives and other manufacturers it would be great. AF trains are not the most easiest one to collect, year of manufacture is often an enigma for me...
I have bought two wide gauge freight cars some time ago with 8 million plates, i think they may be around 1936, end of production. They have, for me, a much better size than Lionel ones.
Now i have to find some more....
Have a great tinplate weekend; Daniel

holding off until I get back from a train show Sunday......
great stuff guys
NICE CARS! The AF Wide Gauge freight cars always looked less European than the Lionel SG cars with those round roofs, and were also more realistically proportioned than the comparable Lionel versions!
Jim, Your layout is great.... Please post so additional so we can see it all! Thanks.

Greg i seen those in a prewar book and also 2 of them on the bay .
One in peacock same frame ives frame no stamp handrails as one you pictured but its cracked and one of the cowcatchers broke off and gone has the ives pickup intact.
The other one has the ives body no stamp handrails flanking doors or holes for them same peacock color as above description but has the lionel 248 frame and Lionel pickup.
The one in my Lionel prewar book shows the Ives frame .
As a note i will not be bidding on them because of the flaws above too bad the one first mentioned has a bad frame otherwise i may have as i like the peacock color .

I'm going to that darned Indiana auction someday, I just have to. It'd be a travesty to live this close and not go there. I better start buying lottery tickets.

Dieseler,
One of those Ives cadet blue (peacock) 3260s also has the two matching cars from the set offered in individual auctions. The set was offered in 1929 and was known as the Blue Comet Express. If the cars were in a little bit better condition I might bid on them. One of the things that I have learned over the years of collecting is that another one will come along at some time.

CMT = 24 gauge sheet metal. I don't know how that compares to Lionel.

Just something a little different - this uniformed porter is the "operator" of a clockwork electric-style British baggage truck that I've had since I was a pup. Bigger than most common scales, he stands about 4 - 5" tall and the truck has the random steering that bangs around the furniture and walls when let loose. I'll post some more pics soon, as I'm cleaning the mechanism at the moment.
Here's a pic of the prototype from around WW1.

Hi gang,
We are in the Promised Land a k a Florida and lo and behold note the tinplate treasure I found in the local train shop. None other than a set of Thomas Industry passenger cars. I never knew Thomas made tinplate. I always thought it was plastic. Shows what little I know. Here are a couple of photos including the JEP voiture lits that I acquired on Ebay and had sent to Florida.
By the way, if you are coming to the Warwick TCA Convention, I hope you are taking Tour 18 which includes my humble abode. Or, even if you have free time that week come on up to Waban (Newton)

OK...back from the train show (and fixed The Mrs supper......no sweat, she doesn't even ask what stuff cost, as long as she gets a trip to the antique store)
Lots of great stuff, held by the Youngstown Model Railroad Club. PLENTY of O,S,HO, and Standard. Picked up the 2623 Baggage car for $5. The seller bought it for the trucks and didn't want the body. The 810 Crane project for $25, a restored boom for $10,the N5 bodies for 50 cents each, and the Marx searchlight for $3.
a copy of Pennsy Power II in great shape for $20
finally picked up a Divco $20
this $4 car will give up it's couplers and brake stands for my 620 project
this pile of parts is most of a 2025 and a 2035, was asking $45, got it for $32. There is enough there to make one complete engine....maybe...never now where I might go with these.
had a blast, their next show is April 8.

Terry,
Some of the cars came with either 4 or 6 wheel trucks. When they had 6 wheel trucks they didn't have belly pans.
The engine is Flyer's Type XV Pacific die-cast engine, cataloged in 1939 and 1940. I believe that a previous owner painted the cab windows the cream color.
Yes the cars do have window material and they are lighted, although I didn't take my photos with the lights on.

Some of the highest prices I have seen for sold items on eBay are in mid-December through mid-Jan. Real deals are available in early November. An AF 3310 just sold for $59. Last week, two sold for $49. In November, they could have been had for $29.
I don't know the reasons why. My guess is it is a Christmas effect with lots of people reigniting their interest during Christmas and the cold winter months. My eBay watching is non-existent in early Nov, and I always miss out. I watch most during the Dec / Jan period. I have noticed that there are a lot more interesting items available during this time, then you start to see a lot of the same items. Nothing seems too be available around York time.
I really need to get a calendar or start attending some of those Indiana auctions.

is the af o 561 would that be considered a 3/16 engine, the prewar sorta s gauge size ?

The 561 is a Pennsylvania K5. It was cataloged in 1940 and 1941.
If it wasn't for that third rail you would swear you were looking at an S gauge engine. Its pretty obvious where Gilbert was headed before the war.

Probably not but as we know, anything is possible. I think we've all read that AF did sell a few 3/26ths 0 sets in 1945/46 and if I remember correctly the 565 and 561 were the engines used.

I enjoy sharing the toys I have collected and the information that I have gathered. This is a great hobby with so many aspects.
