Lee, great shots again. Keep them coming.

Today was the first day in 11 days I started feeling good. Sun was shining outside so I back the car out and went down and took measurements and scribed lines on the plastic sheets. Cut them on the band saw. Got them glued together. Still have to make up some braces for the backs to square them. The two side buildings are cut and I have to do the same to them. Still have to search for the windows and doors I bought for this project. Pics...............Paul

I have the same situation as you with the high wall, then tunnel, and high wall again.  Please inform me as your source for your block wall to the right of the tunnel opening.  The block that you used is exactly what I wish to use to finish the rise of my elevated track.

Thanks,

John, I bought the stone walls at a train shop in Itasca, Americas Best They are G scale I thought the O Scale blocks were to small.

Paul, I'm glad you are starting to feel a good bit better!

The work on the top of the silos looks good!

A belated Merry Christmas to everyone! There was SO much work done in the week before Christmas. This entry will be kept brief, as I'm thinking about doing more of a continual thread about the "new" train room / office and the layout(s) that will be built and played with.

This room was combination office area / boy's bedroom (sans closets) for about 15 years, briefly office / train room, then used as living room / bedroom for about a year. It had a pretty rough life, and needed a lot of work to be used for Christmas Day. Furniture moved multiple times, wallpaper stripped, graffiti removed, holes patched, anchors removed, more holes patched, resurface areas with drywall compound, 2 coats of paint, wood trim for windows, and scrub years of stomped in grime and unknown substances from the floor, including a couple big solidified spills of shellac. I did have some help with wallpaper stripping from older son, both daughters and my wife. My wife helped a lot with the floor and the cabinets. She also helped with some of the assembly of the Christmas Train Tree....

One of the best things things to happen is getting my Dad's 1927 American Flyer train set from my Mom. It was last used in 1985 as best we can tell based on the newspapers it was wrapped in. Very little cleaning to do, a little bit of lube, and it runs real nice! There is still some more to do, a couple missing screws, rewire the headlight, some gentle cleaning and polishing, etc.

  • North side, just started: some of the wallpaper has been removed, big shelf was used as a divider.
  • North side, wallpaper stripped: wallpaper stripped, some large holes can be seen, most of the graffiti is cleaned off
  • West Side, just started: the original wallpaper that was used throughout the room, with separate border that was unbelievably difficult to remove!
  • My wife helping with the Train Tree: You can see part of the west wall redone in the background.
  • Christmas Day in the "New" Train Room!: Some of my family in this shot, enjoying the new room. The hours spent from Thursday to Christmas day with very little sleep were well worth it to see everyone's enjoyment
  • The Christmas Train Tree: All nighter to get it together. For Christmas Day, it was display only, no operational trains. Gauges represented are Standard, O, HO, N, and Winnie The Pooh.
  • The engine from my Dad's 1927 American Flyer: It is in pretty good shape, needs little TLC. I picked up a new headlight shroud Sunday; the original was lost before I was born. I do need to run a new wire for the headlight, it has been missing for a long time as well.

American Flyer on the move!

Got out my two PW F3 AB's repaints and 15" LIONEL MPC passenger train repaints:  NP North Coast Limited and GM&O "Abraham Limited" and ran them.

Discovered the GRJ "roll your own" LED lights that I'd installed in the NP NCL obs car weren't working.  Found the problem was a poor ground connection that had come unsoldered.  All is good now.

I'd forgotten how much better the passenger cars look with the even LED lighting compared to the old two bulb, hot spots look.

Paul, looks like you have a great start on a wonderful plan! Cant wait to see more!

Slowhands, seams like you have a win win there! A train room and something from your dads collection! Also a great family of helpers! Very cool!

Carl, I am glad you had an easy fix. I hope to get that lighting for my passenger cars someday!

Slowhands, You and your family made a nice looking room train room.  The Christmas tree looks great as does the train!  Excellent creativity!

Carl, Congratulations on getting the old set lit and going!

John, The silo area looks great.  I'm glad you had some time to shuffle around all those nice covered hoppers!

Paul, every little bit is one step closer!

John R, The passengers look like they are enjoying the ride up top!

I haven't had much time for the layout with Christmas other than a few laps on the Christmas layout.  I did get my BCR2 in the mail yesterday, put it in and charged it up in the PS2 Shay I got from a Forum member before Christmas.  I turned the charger off before going to bed, so I haven't run the Shay yet.  I lubed it the other day.  Maybe later today after Bible study and PT.  Oh, I have to visit my 93-year old aunt too.  Well, I hope to try out the Shay.

Merry Christmas once again- everyone is doing great work.

Spent the afternoon at our local DMV office...my daughter had to renew her license since she turns 21 in early January. Root canal with no Novocain would be preferable
When we got home I was going to run trains for a bit but the basement was upside down as my wife was packing away all of the boxes and wrapping paper from Christmas. I wandered into my shop and decided to tackle a small project. I have an old ink-jet printer that died and I'm stripping it for the motors and stuff. I'd like to do a gantry crane and have it move back and fourth on the rails. The print head mechanism looks like the perfect solution. Gotta see what voltage the motor is and start planning. Gonna need to buy the crane too.

A lot easier to take some thing apart when you don't have to worry about it going back together.

Paul, your getting there! I have faith you will find the windows and doors!

John, the dome car looks wonderful!

Brian, looks like you all had a nice Christmas! The kids bought me some o scale people for Christmas!

Bob, that is a great idea! Now all I have to do is find a dead printer. LOL!

Carl, good job on the lighting. also the cars look wonderful!

Not much train action down here,  although I am kicking myself because my drive from Springdale, AR to Greenbrier,  AR and back via US 412 and US 65  brought me within a few miles of OGRR World Headquarters in Mountain Home and I didn't stop by!  And I had the Eeep in the car and all!   Oh, well.   One of these years...

Mitch;

As I used to tell a dear friend at work, you should never waste your time kicking yourself... especially when there is a long line of people more than willing to do it for you!!!

UGGGG   Yesterday I did nothing after work!   Between working on the layout, putting out a Christmas display, doing drywall work and cleaning our entire house so we can host the family Christmas used me up!  Tonight I plan to do a little track wiring and thinking about ordering the LC+ Southern 1401 pacific.  May do that today.  And waiting for a few pieces of rolling stock to come in from that Atlanta hobby shop!  : )

Jim

Ran some trains, but now I'm pulling the engines off the track for some maintenance.  Side rods on 765 were squeaking so I figured I better do some maintenance on all of them.  This may also turn into a full track cleaning session. Tomorrow I may make a run to McCormick Hardware and pick up my two new SD70Ace's.  Its a three hour drive one way, but I prefer not to have them shipped.

Sporadic visiting and posting is something I wish I could stop.  There's way too much content here to just casually catch up on.  Also, when posting my accomplishments in the interim there is boat loads of content forgotten.  Rotten documentation habits I guess.  So, if I flood the screen with pics and text every now and again, please forgive.

Some may remember this piece of blasphemy from my demonic backshop.

Well, it was time to breath life into that monster.

The workings of an MTH GG1 fit the plastic Williams shell almost perfectly....just drilled a few new pilot holes for mounting.  Truck sides were drilled through  and ground above and below journals to add demension.

A little silver splash and I give you, AT&SF #13

Got a couple of "freebies" in the past several days.

First, I discovered in my parts cabinet a spare PW F-3 rear power truck which allowed me to replace the one on my CB&Q F-2 (former SF F-3 No. 2343); replacement was successful and the F-2 now pulls like it should.  The "dead" rear power truck is en route to Harmonyards where it will have its magnetraction restored.

Yesterday, I went through a different parts cabinet and found a Tomar Industries drumhead for the NP North Coast Limited which I have out on the Christmas tree layout.  So, installing the drumhead will be tomorrow's project.

And, put the second set of Lionel SF polished aluminum, 15", silhouette strip, passenger cars on the test track to check-out the GRJ LED product the previous owner had installed--they worked great.

Last night I ran my new, to me, MTH RK2002 Union Pacific F3 Diesels. Does anyone have  B unit for these? I modified the 4x8 layout to connect a planned expansion to run full O cars and locomotives. Designed with SCARM and purchased all items from Tinman. Thanks Guys! I'm buying full O cars but forced to use smaller locomotives due to the small layout. Can't wait to start building and run loooong heavy freight.

Thank you Mark as you are always upbeat. There are so many nice folks here on the forum that truly have great layouts, great ideas, great thoughts, and are always helpful when advice is needed. I thank God for helping me through this project as many folks from my church helped with the scenery and landscaping. I learned from years past to go with wide curves, tall clearances. This way, when friends bring their equipment over, we can usually run them. This is a great hobby. Thank You all.

Hi, How do I get the newest post to be at the top of this list so I don't have to scroll all the way down each time? Thanks

I think that would be a browser issue. Some lock on a position, some dont. If it did but stopped, clear cache of browser, then try cookies too (log in again). An update might be doing it. Some OS-es are easier to deal with than others.

Changing the number of posts per page to twenty instead of 40 will help if your's doesn't do it .  That will also speed up some issues if you get a bum connection, like while trying to load a page full of a billion videos. (Then, even vi$eo just existing on a page badly slows a page's loading time now. Too many videos now means I cant see any pictures for an hour or two, even without watching them, all browsers .. pita) It changes back to 40 at times though.

I had to clear the ROW under the tree Christmas Eve to make room for Santa to deliver the gifts. Since I'm still dealing with my cranky CW I changed out the consists to see if I could get better performance. I put the PE Berk on the short fast mail train and put my ATSF 0-6-0 on the PE run. Seems to work much better. Need to fix a loose wire in the Observation car too.

We never did much scenery. Once the tree base area was full of the best wrappings and premier gifts from "us" to "us" that was it.

Santa would leave his stuff right in the way of life, marking a path to the "jackpot pile", often in another room.

We began with stuff most in the way until we got there, Mom then slowed the show down, stopping the action. Clean up, then the train came on (if it wasnt wasnt already I know I got yelled at for running new trains before I opened all my gifts. Or maybe it was for running over Sis's new Barbie's dress, I'm not sure really .... then came Mom's choice distribution by asking "who is the red box for?"& "that one next"," hold on, let me change flash bulbs", etc.. Once that was done, breakfast and then  "us to us" presents last, sometimes in the evening, sometimes right away.

At the Grandparents, nearly the same thing. Some at the tree for looks, but most out of the way. (The non-train Grandfolk had an elaborate manger and fresh Christmas decorations always added to the "pro" doll house... so, "no room at the inn" there either )

Carl, good job on the cars!

Thaddeus, what a wonderful looking train! Looks like it was just made and put into service! Nice and smooth!

Bruce, I have never seen anything like it! Great work!

Paul, things are really taking shape there and looking good! I sure hope you find the windows and doors or it going to looks a little funny just sitting up there! I guess you could always put a billboard on it! LOL Nice work!

Carl, My wife laughs at me cause I save almost everything! You never know when it will come into use again! Nice find!

Jim, way to knock out the sidings! Sounds like a lot of work, but now it frees you up to move onto something else!

Lou, Don't worry about the slippery slope, I too have some that I need to up grade down the road, its all just part of the fun!

Sorry Bob, so much to say and such a small brain I have! I love the little loop under the tree, sure are some nice looking trains you have there. I guess I am going to have to get some old cars for my 1 steam engine for next year!

ahahah right Mike.  That train is only 6.5 feet long.   Sitting on a 11 foot siding!  The shortest of the 4 sidings is 7 feet. So it will fit nicely.  Sometimes I regret using 072 outside and 060 inside.  Takes up a ton of space as I'm sure you are dealing with now. And the straight areas would have been longer.  But then I think how much better the trains look and act on those radius curves im glad I used them!  Got to give up something to gain something else!

Ah I don't think so. I don't use any cars newer than 1959. And should use 1957 as a limit. Hmmm maybe they are from the future?????😃

Andy, great video of your layout.

LeapinLarry, great pics of your layout.

Steve, the sweepings curves make for interesting mainline running.

You know when to throw your hat into the ring and you have to know when to throw in the towel. I officially threw in the towel. I gave up looking for windows and doors. For the life of me I have no clue what I did with them. So rather then waste more time looking I went to an old method I was going to use many years ago. Way back when Fred Dole was selling the brick paper I was also able to get a sheet of doors and windows from him. One night, when I was still working my boss said he could run off extra sheets for me. I had cut them all out and they had been sitting in a couple of chip dip containers all these years. I got them out and worked them a bit more. And I glued them to my building. Now I can start to make up some roofs for the tops, add railings, a pipe for blowing wheat into the top and some kind of hoist for equipment to be lifted tro the building. That is also why I put the double doors in. Pics.....................Paul

Good evening worked today on my MTH row house section on my layout. Elevated this side of the street to make things look a bit different.

Used 3/4" styrofoam for a base and used white painters caulking to glue the sections together and then used the same caulking to fill in the seams on the surface. Spent a few hours putting ground covering on the side of the bank.

Once everything dried  I sprinkled snow on everything to make things look winter like.

For me this is the best part of building a layout.

Yesterday Mr. Brown dropped off some more Cork roadbed so today I will be out in the train room laying that. Also last night I ordered some O54 track to finish up the upper loop, and 2 #4 Scale trax switches. It should be enough to get all the upper loop section done. I am thinking about removing the second track up on the top loop for more building space. If not I will need 1 more switch for the top area.

Everyone have a great day!

Finished demo on the ink-jet printer. I've reduced a once productive piece of equipment to a pile of plastic and three motors and drive assemblies. When you look at one of these things you realize that they are 95% plastic.

Here are the three drives that I salvaged

2018-12-29 09.24.36

The bottom one is what I was after for the gantry crane project. I hooked it up to an old HO transformer I had. Works great at about 6 volts but will run at any speed up to the 18V output of the transformer.

2018-12-29 09.26.24

Here's a video of it in action. Forward-reverse is easy with DC.

And finally the pile of junk

Mark, what w wonderful winter scene ! I agree raising the ground level there makes it look a little better!

Thanks, Mike. The attic space is 40’ wide but only about 8’ deep, so definitely has its limitations.

Adding whisker track length, now that my workbench has been moved to to the New Wing.

Yes, my layout is a mess! Fine. The New Wing will relieve some of that - finally, work in one area, run trains in another.

Anyway, in progress; not even the final shape or edging:

DSCN3921

Rough fitting; there will be a leg tucked under there, some edging and Plexiglas.

DSCN3924

(BTW, that stack of stuff under the new area is my swap meet "for sale" stack; anybody need a lightly-run Williams Blue Goose die-cast steamer and matching 4-car aluminum set?)

I configured my Lionel F3's obtained from @MrMuffin'sTrains, the limited edition #27 engines.  These are beautiful, very very well done engines.  I set up the engines as #27 (powered A) and #72 (unpowered A) also set them up as train 27 on the Legacy 2 remote.  Since these are bluetooth engines, I also "found" them on the lion chief app.

Mark I hope you get good news and get some time to choo choo!!!!     Woodson Charles Ro has them today for 359.00!!  I hadn't seen them cheaper than 404.00.  LHS let me have this one for 369.00.  After showing me he paid 349.00 for it.  So I bought some other stuff too!

Jim

Jim, After waiting 7 weeks, whatever the MRI shows will be good news.  Then the doctor and physical therapist will know exactly what the problem is instead of making very good educated guesses!    I do think I will have time for choo choo this long weekend.  Keep my fingers crossed.

Just learned something amazing!   To me but most of you may already know.  You can run ANY LC, LC+, AND Legacy engine that has blue tooth with the LC-LC+ universal remote!!!   As I have been saying for years.    The LC technology is making its move to the top!

Now if you could just run a Legacy engine on DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pictures? ... I like pictures.  Good idea!

Went into the City yesterday to brave the crowds and see the Holiday sights. My only mission was the Holiday Train Display at the NYC Transit Museum in Grand Central-nailed it! Very nice layout but the store was packed (as was Mid-town), so we didn't stay long. Managed to see the whole thing though and take some pix. Lot's of little ones down at the rail so drone angle shots are all I got. The model of the Terminal is spectacular.

I'm use to crowds having grown up here but I don't think I've ever seen it this bad. This was the closest we could get to Rockefeller Center on 49th St.

Butch,  You have an excellent point!  The thing is my wife is worse off than me.  I think all the old folks (all in their lat 80s and 90s) still think of us as young people.  I have to remember what they were like when they were 62.  Yes, it is a bit draining, especially when I'm not sleeping well.  I am trying to take your advice.  Thank you!!
