Chris- that layout turned out great. Solid operation, and great visual appeal. You should be very proud.

p51 :  The realism of your modeling and the quality of your pictures is just marvelous.  Thanks for posting, I truly enjoy seeing your layout.

Thanks much, Don! When I got rolling with this I didn't expect it to turn out as close to my vision I'd had for what I wanted. I also never expected the reaction from those in the hobby to my work.

Bob, I really appreciate that. The only problem with a layout as small as mine, I only have a finite number of places from which to get decent shots. It's pretty shallow from fascia to the wall in most places, so there's just a few spots to get a scene with any depth.

I believe that I see on your layout today possibly a Rail king C&O Allegheny h8 30-1728-1.

If so can you tell me if you recall where and when you purchased.  I’m very interested in purchasing this 30-1728 engine.  I have 42inch radius curves and this engine will just fit the curves.

I am also very impressed with your layout and design. I’ve watched you develop in such a short time period. Congratulations to you an your family. Thanks for sharing with us.

I appreciate you and your reply Chris.
The Allegheny i have now is ps1 from 1995.
The best an strongest and most powerful of my fleet.
I will continue the hunt for the ps3 version from 2017.

Your trick over the last year has been an amazing feat.
I had to to wait until age 63 to have an operating layout and it’s still doesn’t measure up to your operations.

I’m beginning the weathering of another kit but this time it’s a building from Woodland Scenics. Streets are next... what width did you use on your layout?

Thanks Chris!

@Seth Thomas, I hear you on the power of the Allegheny! They are some great pulling engines.

Had it not been for the fear of my engines getting destroyed on the floor and the help of my carpenter friend Lawrence, I am not sure the layout would have happened so quickly!

The table takes up the width of my room (12') and is roughly 27' long. The walkway through the middle allows me to reach everything but I had to keep my largest curves at O72 and the inner mainline curves to O60 to allow for the walking/ standing area.

Good evening everyone! It has been a while since I last made a post so I thought I would chime in to the fun. Looking at the previous posts, it looks like everyone is doing well and having fun in the hobby! Sadly, I do not have anything to show due to my knee giving me a hard time. Long story short, it turns out my knee is going to need surgery. As a result, I am trying to "baby" so that it does not get worse and also get another product review done before my bed becomes my new "residence." Thanks for reading, and happy railroading!

I'm sorry your knee is giving you trouble.  I had two operations on my left knee, the second being a full replacement.  Maybe you will be able to catch up on good reading from the OGR Forum while you are laid up.

I’ll see Mark’s advice and raise him - I’ve had both knees replaced in the last 4 years. What I see as the big difference between you and Mark and I is that you are quite young and we are sexagenarians (keep it clean ). You’ve got a lot of living to do on those knees, so take the best possible care of them, listen to your doctor and do exactly what your physical therapist tell you. The trains will still be there when your knee is in better shape. Best of luck!!!

If you have not discussed with a doctor about attempting the physical therapy route, you might give it a try for you knee...

In the past three years, I’ve been convinced they know what they are doing.

I’m a three time graduate of their programs, I kid with my wife that they give frequent flyer mileage where I go... Anyway, I’m walking now and I can reach across my layout now...

So I can truly recommend to you this option...

Good luck and enjoy the hobby!

Lee, great scene...derailment unplanned but the camera was rolling.  The scene reminds me of a major derailment on the mainline down the road from my boyhood home.  All of us kids where hanging around on a summer's day when this incredibly load noise could be heard off in the distance.  We took off on our bikes and headed for the tracks to find box cars thrown all over the place.  The two boxes that stood out to me where both on their sides with doors wide open.  One was loaded with mustard...all sizes jars and containers, and the other car was loaded with Seagrams Seven, from the little nips to the jugs  Although we played it straight, many scavenged the scene before the cops showed up...according to some, it was an extremely hazy summer

Paul. I was pretty excited about this video something brand new and I finally finished my RS-3 I don’t know what happened but after viewing it was pretty neat so I kept it.  I bet as a kid that was  a pretty awesome site of that derailment.

After all the inspectors left the UP Rail-Truck Service dropped off some trailers to load all the damage freight so the empty car can head to the car shops for some repairs. One trailer is already loaded and the other is staged to load  the other side of the car. The shipment was a total lost.

Lee, great looking "pup" trailers.  The ground cover work and the ballast around the tracks looks realistic...

Actually I hate the plants! They attract flies and bees like crazy! But they were there when we bought our house and they're really a plant that requires no care,  just tying the stems together to keep them upright.  I wait till late August to harvest them, strip the leaves and tie them to a rafter to dry, takes about 4 months.

Excellent projects everyone!  What a variety!!

I have built all the supports for the realigned overhead track that I moved back towards the wall to accommodate the length of the Atlas bridge.  It made the most sense to extend it overtop of the lower passing siding.  That made for some interesting supports.  I do not like the looks of a lot of these supports, but I have to keep in mind the who trestle system has only been intended to be temporary until I find something I really like.

Looking good Mark

I figured out that I have 75 signals accumulated over the years, from dwarfs to full signal bridges, and I need some standard mounting/wiring method to use with them. Just randomly attaching each one to the layout and then wiring it in, then moving on to the next one, isn't going to cut it.

So I've come up with a plan. Once I have tested it and have it operational, I'll take some pix and pass it on.

Don Merz

Well, my project took a lot longer than a day. I decided I wanted a lower loop below my main layout. Some of my ideas included a different style than the traditional landscaping I had done before. I also wanted to use Atlas track instead of Fastrack. I wanted to create space on the ends to leave room for some Menards, MTH or Woodland Scenics prebuilt structures that could just be plug and play. After using a track plan program, many trips to the hardware store and countless nights of sanding and painting, I am ready to show the progress so far.

This evening I began my initial step in the weathering process for the Woodlands Scenic’s Corner Emporium.

I also positioned the Korber building I recently assembled onto the layout.  It’s near the correct position but not wired into the accessories power as yet...

Very neat layout NS1975!

Mark I enjoy seeing your progress tonight!

And Lee, my guess the company’s  insurance adjusters will be able to use your video of the accident.  Just like being there!  I just caught the end of Mizzou vs. Ark game in the SEC basketball tournament in Nashville.

Boats of this size actually plied the Great Lakes before the construction of the Welland Canal.  They would bring ore from Labrador to the mills in Ontario or the U. S.. I have a book about early lake boats,  most were built in the late 1800's early 1900's. My boat plans called for an 8 foot length but I had to reduce the size by removing one hatch to the hold.

This was an intense build,  took a long time even though I worked on it part time.

Here are a few more pictures.

I need to rig the masts and spar, add more railings.

Finished the hand rails on the ore boat and installed a Seuthe smoke unit in the funnel.

Got the Plastruct tanks done and laid out my fuel depot. See my TPRR topic.

Mark - Kolacky is a cookie made with either sour cream or cream cheese in the dough made into little rectangles, filled with apricot, poppy seed, cherry (any thick fruit filling) folded over to cover the filling in the middle baked (to resemble stained glass) and then dusted with powdered sugar. I have never had a decent one prepackaged - its either home made or from a good bakery - or from a restaurant who makes them. There are also yeast raised kinds which are also good.

Thank you.  This was my first major build.  Never made anything like it before.  I self taught woodworking skills which helped a lot. It was not an overly expensive model,  probably less  than $100.

I have  a couple of large factory buildings that I need to finish and then start on my blast furnace model.

I worked on my signs from Miller Engineering signs that I picked up at Christmas.  I got the Planters Peanuts and Union Pacific signs.  I needed to test them out, cut the battery connections out, solder some wires and then thread the wires to the terminal strip.   Monday they will be glued into place.  I really like these signs.  I now have 8.
