What a beautiful spot for a layout!!

Good looking O  GAUGE figures in the photo Steve

I thought something similar.  Leave it to you, Dallas, to word that comment just right!

A replacement truck from Lionel arrived for my BNSF ES44AC. It had been a bit loud when running and my NS ES44AC was super quiet. I tracked it down to a slight binding in the gears of the front truck. Not enough to affect performance but I didn't want to wait until it did plus the sound was terrible.

DSC_1990

Pretty easy project, swap the rollers and side frames over and reconnect.

DSC_1991

I did notice a few wear marks on the replacement truck, some of the paint was rubbed where the side frames mount and there were faint marks on the wheels that indicate it had seen brief track time. I wonder if Lionel is salvaging parts from returns they can't fix?

Anyway no binding I could find in the gears of the new truck, got it all back together but didn't have time to track test it. I'll have to wait until I can find some more train time.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Picked up six 022 switches and four 031 switches last week. Spent a good portion of the day taking scotchbrite pads to the tracks and cleaning them up. They really weren’t bad at all and they work better than the one 022 I already have. Well, all but one of the 022R which isn’t powering up at all. Just need to open it up and check it out. Ideas on what to check for anyone??

Also will need some LED bulbs, 4 light housing covers (probably just 2 though since others will be in an underground yard), and I’ll need six controllers unless I opted out and do my own switch board. I do like the Lionel controllers with the lights though. The switches came with three controllers I can rebuild so we will see what I come across at York. The one 031 is missing the short extension too but that doesn’t matter to me. I’ll have to grab some pins and insulator pins at York also. Less then 3 weeks away! It’ll be my first York!!!03CDDD40-35A4-45C6-BA56-C39C24ACAAA38766934B-0CCC-466D-899A-AE19B7C0DA07

*Edit: I solved the switch that wasn’t powering up. The metal prong next to the fixed voltage plug just needed to be bent back into place. I’m very pleased with my purchase and all switches throw magnificently!

My wife has said, wouldn't it be nice to have a nice outbuilding for a layout.  If I did what Steve is doing, I would have to come out of retirement to pay for it, then never have time for the layout!

Terry and Steve, congratulations. We love the new building photos! They bring back a lot of memories.

Things are slowly coming together in the engine service area. The Lubritorium building and interior has been completed as far as possible until the pit is installed, track is in place, and the floor is down.

This is an ugly building, just as they were on the N and W. Serviceable and ugly. Paula likes it because it is a reasonable replica complete with 24 hoses that are used to dispense oil, grease, etc. It will be a good addition when completed.

After dinner, we went out to the layout and hooked up one of the MTH floodlights. With the lights off, it was blinding, far too bright. When Alexa changed to the blue night view, things were much better. We need Rich’s presence when we place the lights and adjust the brightness. The area is too large for two people to do it. This is not a brightly lit football field.

Bob, the crew in the cab looks great!

Mark, I debated over it for a while, $60 plus shipping for the truck. When you think about it that's almost a 7th of the cost of the engine new. But the sound was getting to me and I was getting worried it would turn into more than a slight bind and then I would have wished I had replaced it.

You can check to see if yours is binding by removing the truck and spinning the wheels by hand.

Bill, looks great!  One question; is 'lubritorium' a Norfolk and Western term?  I never heard of it.  It actually sounds like 'crematorium' to me.  If I don't ask, I'll never know.

Mark, truth be told, we had seen photos but didn’t know what they were. Harry Hieke and I were talking one winter day and he mentioned a “Lubritorium.”

We looked it up, found photos, and said, “Why not, few people will have heard of one.” So we planned what to do, originally deciding to build one from leftovers of a Korber kit.

Again we were talking to Harry and he remembered an old building that he had stored in a neighbor’s garage; “It might be just the thing. When it gets warmer, we will dig it out.”

So here it is, almost ready to be installed hopefully next week, knee depending. It has been fun to make a few changes and do the interior. I am sure that some of the N and W followers will know all about them.

We will use the Korber parts for a machine shop addition to another building. No more stuff after that on this side. Time to install everything that is lying around and do scenery.

Afternoon guys what great work is being done buy all you fine folks! I know you all like it when I list everyone, but today is not one of those days. I am sorry for those guys! But I do want to say that I think things are looking great!

@aussteve Steve welcome aboard, I was there about 4 years ago! I hope you have a 4 legged inspector to help you along!

@RSJB18 Bob, looks outstanding! But I may be getting forgetful, but I thought the guys were a little taller. They seem to be missing something! LOL

Well guys I did get a little time out in the train room today and was looking at an old bumper I got with the prewar stuff from a friend and a new bumper I got from Jeff the Train Tender. The old one is red and the new one is brown. My question to you all is should I what color should I paint both of them? Photo below.

I hope you all have a great week! I hope to get back out to the train room tomorrow as I got more parts for my gang car and hope to get it running! I know this is silly, but its the first time I had something really that wasn't DCC and something I can work on somewhat! LOL

Remember to please try and find time to have fun with your layout and trains!

Afternoon/Evening everyone I hope you all had a great day and got a lot done!

Thanks for all your input on the bumper color! Red it will be! LOL

@SIRT Steve, nice job on the cobblestone looks great and the weathering job on the Burlington car is outstanding! Happy retirement!

Well guys I was able to get out to the train room today. My plan was to get the Lionel 50 gang car running as I got all the parts from Jeff at the Train Tender! But every time I put it together the armature would bind up. I don't know what the deal is it has a new gear, bearing, Thrust washers, Thrust bearing, even the small ball bearing for on top of the armature till I lost it on the floor somewhere! LOL

I will be calling Jeff to order a couple extra and pick his brain if he might know why its binding! I also hope maybe someone here knows why it might be binding! Any and all help would be great!

I hope you all have a great week and fun with your layout and trains!

Mike- does the motor have a small screw in the top of the motor? If so, you need to adjust it to give the armature enough room to move.

Look at the top, if it has a small hole in the top cover, then grab a small Allen wrench and back out the screw a little.

I think the pullmor's in question have white plastic tops.

Bob

The cobblestone looks great, Steve!  Congratulations on your retirement!!

I spent some time yesterday and today getting out the few semi-scale engines and cars I have, lubing them, and running them on my layout in preparation for the Model Train Club of Zelienople Easter open house this Saturday.  I'm also taking a Legacy diesel and matching caboose.  There is one track for Legacy and three tracks for conventional operation.  I have not been much help building the modular layout, but we had plenty of help.  We were pleased to have several young fellows and 3 boys join after the Christmas open house.  They have done a great job!!  The layout is much lower than works well for me right now, but it is built so kids  can see the trains and scenery.

Back to my layout, I can report that I was able to run semi-scale trains at toy train speeds on my layout without mishap.   I was pleased with that.

Well @mike g..
glad to hear you got to spend time in your train room again.

Today I was in the shop adding paint to extra pieces I found in order to expand the gymnasium for the school building I’ve been working on since mid March.  It’s a DPM modular piece kit.

The rain and snow has allowed me time in the shop, but today it quit raining at about 11:00AM and I snuck in a mowing session.  Then back into the shop to paint mortar joints. Added some Woodlands Just Plug wiring inside and just now quit.

Discovered yesterday evening a friend has a C&O Allegheny by K-Line like @gandydancer1950.
Maybe I can find someone to add sound.  He told me to make an offer.  And That’ll  cost me😅

Have a good week!

Thanks for all the kind comments, guys. I have been observing each of your progress and impressed by your modeling creations! You guys have presented some fine work on here. Good luck with the great scenes going forward.

The last & final layout is staged for a build. I have everything completed to assemble it. As many know, I spent 30 years in Fl. and 20 in Nashville. A move back to Tampa is in the plans, just don’t when due to the economy / market.

I like to keep busy so as I move on with my next phase in life, it will be interesting to see what lies ahead.

Austeve,

For my last layout in my previous home, I poured a slab like this attached to the back of my 2 car garage.  This photo reminds me of that feeling of excitement I had, knowing my dream and plan had finally begun!  At the same time, I chuckled at myself, thinking my neighbors must think I'm nuts building a room for a layout.  But I never looked back, enjoyed every moment making the building and the layout and I still reminisce about it because it was so special.

My current layout in our new home is in the basement.  I like it, too.  But for other reasons, most of which because I learned a lot from the old layout.  But my current room, though cool, isn't as cool as that separate building made just for trains.

I know you are going to have electricity.  Are you going to have a bathroom, too?

Mike

Iron Horse, its hard to explain but the train room is being built before the house.   It will be the staging area during our move. So far it's been a very difficult and frustrating process.   In the end it may have a sink, shower, bathroom, hot water heater, refrigerator,  AC and heat.   Table height will be about 31 - 32 inches.

Sounds like an envious railroad room.  Best wishes.

Steve, something to consider.  Mock up a table of sorts at your anticipated height then mock up another one or two tables at other heights.  Maybe try 40" or something like 44".   Work on some kind of project at the trial heights.   Find a height that most comfortably addresses your height and reach.

Twelve years ago I built a layout 30" high for a gentleman's 10 year old son.  He is now as tall as I am and now the whole family stoops to work on the RR.

Hi Scott,

Looking forward to seeing them

Thanks, Alex

Alex Woodland Scenics makes some quality buildings. They should look great on the layout.

This week the grandsons built three Korber sand towers. Then they collected scenery materials. One bucket of clean sand and another one with pea gravel mixed in. This should be more than enough for the layout.

It has been 75 at OBX the past few days.

Morning guys I hope your all doing well!

Bob, the marker lights look perfect!

Alex, that sure is a nice building! I wish I had more room on my layout. But as it is I have building sitting under the layout due to lack of space!

Well I spent the day out in the train room yesterday working on my gang car, with no luck! There is no adjustment screw just shims, I tried every combination and nothing worked. The good thing is there is an older gentleman that lives about a mile away that works on Lionel and MTH products, so I am taking it over to him here in a little bit.

While I was in there I installed a new yard light and cleaned track, but the best part was that I spent maybe 2-3 hours running my trains!

You know it's funny when you haven't ran trains for awhile it seems that the gremlins come in and do things just to screw with you! Last time things were running great and this time dead spots, hence track cleaning! LOL

Well I hope you all have a great day and find time for your layouts and trains! Most of all I hope you all have FUN!

Afternoon guys, Hope you are all doing well!

@leapinlarry Larry great photos of @farmerjohn layout! You are right up there, you both have AMAZING layouts!

@Pingman Carl the first of 9 looks Outstanding!

Well as for me I was able to get out to the train room for a little while today. I moved my fueling stating closer to the service area and while I was at it I changed the lights out to LED's. I also installed a old lionel yard light for the service tank yard. Thats about it, here are a couple photos below.

Hi guys I hope your all having a great weekend!

Well guys I got my gang car back today and runs like a champ! It only coast me $20 to have him replace the axel, come to find out it was bent just enough! He was nice enough to let me take a couple photos of his train room! Check this layout out! LOL

I hope you all have a great Easter!

You should spend more time at his house Mike. Looks like a great train room.

Making progress on a scratch-built ice house to compliment the Lionel operating ice station. I loosely modeled it on the Atlas kit (see photo), but with a much narrower footprint to fit in the limited space available. Still need to add a 3D printed handrail and install an access ladder, but they'll go on last after painting, which is the next step.

Morning guys Happy Easter and Passover!

Bruce, the icehouse is looking great!

Bob, Nice to see you took some time for yourself to sit back and enjoy all your hard work! Sometimes you just need to sit back and run trains! Thanks for the videos!

As for spending more time at that layout I would love to, the problem is that he works train shows all up and down the west coast. From Washington all the way down near the Mexican border. So, he is on the road a lot. It's a shot in the dark when I can catch him at home! LOL

Well, I hope to get a little train room time today, but that's not a given! I hope you all have a great Easter Sunday!

I had unpacked some of my recent blow-out specials from TrainWorld.  I bought some B&O heavyweight passenger cars.  Upon unpacking them I had 3 screws in a box and a bottom that basically dropped out because of the screws not being screwed in.  Put in the diaphragms.  Not sure why thats not done in the factory but oh-well.

Looking forward to running them along the Baltimore & Ohio Lionel Pacific and Atlas Madison cars that I purchased from @MrMuffin'sTrains.  Also took a video last night running this set.

Not today, and not really on the layout, but I do have a big job tomorrow.

I was sleeping nice last night, dreaming of today's Easter dinner with my "kids" and grandchildren, and was awoken with a CRASH!

25 plus years of organized by month TCA Quarterlies, LCCA Lion Roars. TTOS Bulletins and LOTS Switcher mags came crashing down - shelf brackets folded!

I had a few hours this afternoon so I started painting in my low profile backdrop mountains (no picture yet).   Then I turned my attention to my new-to-me set of ROW Alco PA's.  Thankfully no one had left a battery in this 30 yr-old locomotive, but the shell had to come off the powered A-unit anyway as the speaker came loose in transit and broke loose both windshields.  Some glue and double-faced tape & I was back in business.  After a lube job it was on to the test track where much stalling & sputtering occurred.   Ok, clean the track & the wheels, but not much improvement...   Undetered I hooked up the whole ABA set & viola ! the thing runs like a dual Pittman-motored engine should !  Apparently the set of pickups on the dummy A really help.   Looking forward to running this on a layout someday !IMG_2795

Pulled three x29s from mail/express in passenger team track. Spotted them in town team tracks for pick up. Spotted 3 coal hoppers at town coal business from main yard and picked up the 3 x29s and returned through main yard to business spur.

I can understand the shock seeing all the contents on the floor. Last year two rows of shelving (about 16 feet worth) and hanging clothes fell from the wall in my wife's walk- in closet. The shelf clips were plastic and apparently weakened with age and got brittle. The falling shelves and clothes jammed the closet door partly shut so it was difficult to even figure out where to start.  The only good part was a forced reorganization of the entire closet!Closet Shelf CollapseShelf Collapse 3

Last night, I was all excited to run my Lionel B&O passenger cars that I mentioned earlier.  I brought my B&O Atlas F units out, and put the cars on the track, and realized one of the Lionel cars was not tracking well.   Turned the track power on, and cars lit up and immediately I had a short that shut everything down.  Upon further inspection the car that was not tracking well was not tracking well for a reason, the wheels were literally falling out of the axle.  I looked at it for a while but 2 of the 3 wheels on one of the trucks literally were not in the truck.  I am stunned that you could possibly miss this when putting the car together.  Will call and let them know I am returning it to be fixed.

Afternoon guys, I hope your all having a good Monday!

@jbmccormick & @Alex M great looking cars guys! I have been thinking about getting some for my UP 4-8-4. Now it is making me want them even more!

@Lionelski WOW John! That's one heck of a mess to have to clean up! I feel for you! You might think about going digital or getting stronger brackets!

@pennsynut Looks like fun, but also a busy night at the RR! Sorry to hear about your short and that you have to send it back to have it fixed! Shouldn't be that way!

@samparfitt Sam, great little layout! I think I am going to have to build something like that for the set I just got for free, but on a 4 x 8 sheet.

Well guys I haven't done much today. I went out and made a couple videos of my layout as a forum member  @jhl1963 asked if I had any photos past my 12/21/2018 update. So much has changed I thought it would be easier to just make the videos. Here they are for your enjoyment! LOL

I hope you all find time to have fun with your layouts and trains today!

Today, I did benchwork. I have repurposed wood from previous projects to avoid costly wood purchases that I don't need. I cleaned out my railroad room of clutter to give myself space to see and think. Finally I took yet another look at my track plan in AnyRail to see how I would expand my proposed layout. I almost sent Ross an order but I'm still in shock over the taxes I had to pay this year(my own doing) so I need a few days to recover before spending more money but.....I have my track list and I'm going with Ross so in a few days I'll send out the order to get the track  and start placing my track on the bench work( L shape 30' x 18'). I'm determined to make progress everyday even if its something small but today was a lot of work....feels good.

Just checking in guys!

@Steamfan77 Andy thank you! It's been a fun and frustrating adventure! LOL The turn table looks great,I wish I had a plan and room to allow one!

@Maxandy sounds like a good start. You sound like me, reuse everything you can and build what you can! I hope you will post some photos and maybe a track plan of your future layout. It's always fun to fallow a build from the start as it goes along!

Everyone have a great day, nothing but lots of rain here today. So I have been chasing water, cleaning gutters and drain pipes! LOL I should have been running trains! Maybe tomorrow as I know I wont be on Wednesday and we are having some trees taken down!

Remember please find time to have fun with your layouts and trains!

Ran the long freight with the Berkshire locomotive. No, I did not even try to cleanup the layout!

@Victor Bertolina

Victor:

That is a great video. If that is the 736 Berkshire, that was my first locomotive in 1953. I still have it and still runs very well! That engine can really pull a train. My son got it up to 17 cars includung the caboose before it skidded too much to get the train in motion. Though we now run a bunch of MTH Proto-Sound 2 and 3 power, the Berkshire is till my favorite engine.

Mike:

You have created a BEAUTIFUL layout!!!!!! Bravo!!!!!

@randy.harrison

Thanks

That is the 736 from the 50's. I received that locomotive and a bunch more from a very close friend. They all needed maintenance from resting for over 50 years and the Berkshire needed a lot from motor bearings to e unit rebuilding and replacing missing parts. The Berkshire is a really nice locomotive and pulls really well on the excessive grades on my layout.
