Snow is battering the east coast, the north central and north western US. The snow day in Central Virginia closed the garden center (The Great Big GreenHouse) where our modular group is set up.  However, a good train day at home. How did you spend your snow day?

The snow didn't make it this far south, but it got close. I got scheduled to work OT today (more train money ). I was planning on running some trains and maybe buying some. Instead, (and very fortunately due to the temp and wind), I spent the day in a hangar working phase inspections and gigs.

I am going to replace the knuckles on an MPC boxcar I just bought shortly after I am done here and maybe later I'll get to running trains.

Continued on the cliff. Filled in and painted the base at the board. Added a small piece to the right of the cliff to give a transition from the blank wall.  I made a small RR tie retaining wall at the top corner of the stone wall. Tried painting the "smoke" stains on the tunnel arch (first time ever). Going to ballast the track next.
Worked on the roadway that will serve the sidings on this side of the layout. The road pieces are sprayed and are drying. I painted the board black so nothing shows through from underneath when I glue the road down.

Good productive day when its snowing outside. 2017-01-07 16.52.25

PS- Anyone know where I can get a 2037 decal for the cab on my 2-6-4? Its missing from this side of the cab, bought it this way.

I ended up shoveling more snow than our local crack weather teams predicted would be necessary.  We were only supposed to get one inch but got six instead.  Nevertheless, the day was not completely lost.  I took a bunch of photos of our Christmas Carpet Central Railway for inclusion on the Tinplate forum and spent about an hour running trains under the tree for the last time this holiday season.  Everything is scheduled to come down tomorrow.

Went for my usual 4-5 mile trek up and down the C&O Canal just as the snow started.

Ate lunch

Went to the gym

Went to the trash dump

Went to the lake to see what was happenin' (not much!)

Had some delicious Peking Duck from one of my local hangouts.

Oh.....you mean the trains? I swapped out a few freight cars on the layout with things on the shelves. Trying to keep it fresh. I even ran the trains for a few minutes.

I worked on the new yard I'm adding to my layout this morning. I need to add the plywood and foam next. Then paint and add ground cover and lay track. After lunch it was time to shovel out the driveway. Hopefully this will be are one and only snow here in NC.

Can I see your full Layout? It looks interesting.

Well, it's going to annoy my painter, but I went up to our 3rd floor layout room and put about 8 Post-Its on all the gaps in the woodwork that need to be caulked or filled before I consider the job to be complete.  He thought he had 2 days left to finish, but I think he has 3.

My thinking is, he'll be annoyed for a day or so, but I'll have to look at all the gaps and blemishes for the rest of my life.  I opted for him to be annoyed for a day and to get the cracks filled.

In his defense, he's working on space with portions that were last semi-finished in the 1930s or which has never been touched since the house was constructed in the 1870s.  There are large stretches of wood that have never been painted before.  When you put primer on them for the first time in 140 years, you can almost hear H. Ross Perot's famous sucking sound....

I also measured for attic ventilation fans for the summer months and cut some baseboard molding to finish the job finishing.  After the painter is finished, I start building.

I also drove a mile through the snow to the picture framer and picked up some items I had framed for the train room walls.  Mostly, however, I paused now and again to look at the snow piling up outside.  It's really coming down hard today.

Two of my kids were returning to college today. One was driving and was good to go. The other was flying south and there were a buttload of cancellations first thing this morning because of snow.  Spent half the day helping him get a rebooking. Success.

In the afternoon ran trains including my new Williams F3s.

I did run trains a bit after all.  With all the snow in the South, the Southern Railway was able to coerce the New York Central to loan them a snow plow.  Here we see two Southern RS1's pushing through the snow.

I also noticed my wife's sense of humor once again.  A 1948 Porshe convertible.  The owner must be a hardy soul indeed!!

I stepped over the carpet layout a couple of times and kept thinking that it would be a perfect day for simulating some operations.  As I really do enjoy operations and it's been a while. But it was kinda cold so I researched an interesting Burlington Route rail car turned into Chicago diner instead.  Also, I added to my collection of silver/chrome colored papers (ex., from bottle safety tops) and interesting patterns from the insides of security envelopes.  I hope to use the first to create a kitchen in my MTH PR diner and the second to create carpet or wallpaper designs in my passenger cars.  So far only lots of collecting and thinking about it.  The snow wasn't too bad.

Tomlinson Run Railroad

Well it isn't snowing here in the Chicago area, but I had some vacation days to use while my kids are still on Christmas / Winter break. I opened up my new LC+ multi remote and learned via another thread that it won't run 5 of my older LC engines. I knew that was likely going to be the case, but per some other forum talk some updates may be coming! I also cleaned my track using my new track cleaning car. I don't know how my engines were running with how dark those scrubbing pads got. Yikes!

Peter, I am so far from VA that I always look forward to pictures and video's from your Great Big Greenhouse displays. I haven't seen any this year. Did I miss the thread?
