I recently acquired a pre-war 1054 freight set. After getting help identifying it, I decided to do a little maintenance. I had the pilot wheels replaced and one drive wheel on the 1661E. A little regular maintenance, set of brushes and it's running nicely. It ran before, but I wanted to have it usable. The transformer station needed a new cord and binder post hardware. A little cleaning of the rheostat arm contact and it works like charm. Not bad for an 81 year old set.

I found a layout that uses a 45° cross. I got some older looking 027 track and a 1023 cross. Well, the engine bumps over the crossing. Got out the Dremel and went to work. Trimmed some of the plastic for gear clearance. It's better now, but still more bumping than I want to put the engine through.

What are my options for a 45° crossover?

Thanks.

I took the tails off of the X and took the rail path down to tie height leaving just enough to hold the diamond. I made a channel through there.

The Lionel Jr. wheels seem just a tad smaller. It's not jumping anymore, but a little bump when passing through. I even beveled the edges of the rail points around the diamonds. It may be the motor base and the new slides.

Did Marx have a 45? I guess not if David is reworking a 1023.

Is this as good as it gets?
