Came across a nice looking passenger car set with red 2600 series cars. Along with it was a beat up 1666 engine and a 2689WX tender but someone has removed the whistle unit from the tender.
So I am looking to buy an engine that pulled this set at one time or another.
From what I can tell and found the 1666, 1668, 238 all may have been with the set.
So which one is it?

You need to be more specific with which 2600 series numbers. Are they the low series 2600, 2601, & 2602, or the higher series of the 2600's? If it is the low series, the engines were 238E, 229, 225E, 225 only (Dave McEntarfer's Guide to Prewar Sets.)
If the cars have nickel steps, they came with either a 238E w/whistle tender or either a 225E (no whistle) or 225W w/whistle tender.
Cars with no steps came with either a 238 or 229 loco.

They have nickel steps, hand rails and journal boxes.
By far the most common engine they came with, (the cars should have the 1938 magnetic operating couplers, red body with red roofs) is the Gray 238(E) PRR Torpedo loco.
I have both the 238 and 225 for sale if you're interested.

In the 1938 catalogue Set number 182E shows the 225E with the sheet metal 2265T tender. The 186W set shows the 238E Torpedo with the 2265W sheet metal tender. The 1939 catalogue shows Set 146W with the 225 locomotive and the 2245W diecast whistle tender. All of the above sets are pictured with the 2600 series red cars. Set 146W was also offered in 1940.
If you are not a purist the 600, 601, and 602 red cars were the same as the 2600s etc. The 600s appeared in many different sets between 1933 and 1942.

I am by no means a purist, but like to keep the the cars matched up with the engine that may have pulled them from that time period.
On second thought, maybe I am a purist!
