In the process of loading engines, I ran across a situation where the IPAD loses connectivity with the WIU.  This seems to only occur when the engines have been inactive for some time and the battery is low.

The IPAD indicates a strong signal with the WIU, and per Barry's guide, I set the home site to "ignore" to eliminate IOS as a possibility.

Rebooting the IPAD or DCS handheld separately has no effect. The only way to re establish connection is thru a TIU/WIU shutdown and powerup. The system then works fine until I try to add the engine with the low battery. Note, however, that the DCS can find this engine.

The engine is currently plugged in and being recharged, but I am wondering if this is a typical condition?

Try just using PS3 engines only if you have a couple and see if the issue goes away.

I was having issues with using a PS2 engine(s) in consist with PS3 versions. I believe there's something wrong but I can't prove it.

I started looking at the reason that I used the app with different TIUs on different layouts. I have not identified where the issue crops in yet. I have seen (maybe!), there's something when a PS2 engine doesn't respond fully or fast enough, and the system doesn't like it? The battery was charged enough to play shutdown sounds. I believe the system lost where the engine was associated with exactly what TIU.

I can't pinpoint if it's the app or the DCS version either at fault.

Out of frustration I haven't gone back to that particular PS2 engine for full testing in consists to research it further. I did finally get the system to locate the engine on it's own and re-associate it to it's proper TIU. Before that I kept getting messages about "engine not on track".

I did hit refresh and get the connectivity error message. Even doing a read on accessories or switches will not bring back the connectivity and it seems the only way it can get reconnected is by rebooting the TIUs/ WIU (they are on the same power switch).

To Joe’s point, I just took the engine with the issue off the charger and turned on track power etc. To confirm WIU connection, I turned on a on a siding and several engines already in the system - no issue. When I tried to add the problem engine, the system timed out. Hitting refresh gave the connectivity error message. However, the DCS remote had no issue finding the engine.

I repeated these steps on a different track with identical results.

For the next test I will reset the engine. BTW, this engine is a PS 2 upgrade and has never had any issues.

I was getting similar results when the system ran into an issue. It may be an issue that the system can't overcome? So it says TIU not found?

A work around can be to delete and re-add when possible. I believe it still is a TIU association issue that maybe scrambled. Your problem and results are slightly different than mine. Once lost, I had trouble getting the engine back even with the remote.

Have you tried to run your engine in conventional again?

My problem pops up after power cycles when running mixed consists of PS2 with PS3. I believe it's when the power is restored and the direction is being set, the system loses track of a PS2. It happened in a certain instance so I worked around it finally. It took a long time to get the engine to be recognized by the system at all. I had just run the lash-up the day before without issue. I'm waiting for the engine to show some problem further, to help identify what really went wrong.

I too, did not understand what happened to cause a message of no TIU found when a problem is on the rails. It wasn't consistent. I got other messages like engine not on track and even loading other engines with no info as if the signal was poor?? Yet the remote showed signal level of ten.

In a previous release, it had even scrambled a PS3 engine so that it needed to be reset. It was stuck in reverse.

Good point!

While getting other engines ready,  I noticed several NiMH replacement batteries either rejecting a charge or not being fully charged after 8 hours.

The focus problem engine has the 3v battery pack and was easily found by the handheld. However, I will see if its output is as designed.

Is the WIU more sensitive than the handheld to a low battery condition?
