Any thoughts about the possibility of Lionel releasing an exclusive Vision Line oil fired version of the #4014? Interestingly enough Broadway Limited has released the Excursion Version, Wilson Aftercooler Equipped, 25-C-100 Oil Tender version in HO.......will Lionel follow suit in O?  If so will it be a stand-alone complete version with a new tender, sound modifications, firebox modifications and other unique details, or just a new tender with some add-on engine details (not readily accomplished) but possibly installed by Lionel service? Would this tend to alienate those who already purchased the coal fired #4014 or will everyone line up again for the new version?.......Unfortunately I missed out on the coal fired version so I will gladly stand in line if another opportunity presents itself.

For what it's worth, remember that the model of 4014, as well as all the other road numbers that Lionel elected to offer of the remaining displayed UP 4000 class locomotives, is/are of the "as delivered" locomotives on the first order of 20. If Lionel decides to offer an oil burning version of 4014, after the real one is restored & operating, they will have to make a lot of other changes/up-grades, than simply making the tender with an oil bunker.

Understood. As noted there would be many modifications from eliminating the stoker couplings, firebox modifications, ashpan elimination, plumbing changes, aftercooler, and the list goes on......let alone new sound chips, etc.

Why new sound chips?

I imagine you wouldn't want coal loading sounds with an oil tender.  That's about all I can think of.

Let's not forget a larger enclosed cab...

Agreed, that's why the caveat "(not readily accomplished)" was included........short of changing the complete shell.....and even then there would likely be complications........guess I'll just start saving up for a new release...... and as Martye noted.......I'll have plenty of time to save.......

In the meantime, the HO excursion version of the Broadway Limited on You Tube is somewhat interesting to watch.

NEPA,

I'll admit, I bought into the VL 'drama' and BTO when they were offered.  Wish I didn't.

There's a lot of VL BB out there-I'm sure you know that.

Many are NIB or lightly used and priced accordingly-well below the 'street' price offered when new.  A little looking around pays huge rewards.  I saw one sell for $1375!

Happy hunting!

Might not bas difficult & far fetched as you might think. The very first Legacy steam locomotive model was indeed a CORRECT UP 4000 class locomotive of the second order of 5 (4020 thru 4024), and was superbly detailed. The ONLY error that Lionel made, was the whistle! In all there vast efforts involved in developing Legacy, with its new Cab-2 and command base, they completely overlooked the correct sounding whistle for their model of #4024. That said, that first Legacy model of the famous UP 4020 thru 4024 was en excellent model, and could be reissued easily as an oil burning 4014 in the future. Plus, Lionel could easily offer a "limited edition" of #4005, which was the only 4000 class UP steam locomotive to ever be converted to burn oil fuel, back in the original steam days (the 4005 is also on display in a museum in Denver, Co.).
