I was looking around YouTube and came across this fantastic travel documentary done by the BBC:

Great Railway Journeys - Zambezi Express

Michael Wood starts in Cape Town then goes on through the Karoo, Botswana, Bulawayo, Wankie and ultimately ends up at Victoria Falls. This documentary shows a glimpse of railroads and life in the de-colonization of Africa from perspectives of whites and blacks.

There are TONS of steam engines in this 1 hour show, I highly recommend giving this documentary a view!

Of this series, this has always been my favorite episode...  Being a steam fan all of the steam train action is fantastic.  I never get tired of watching "Maria" and "Jennifer", those two beautiful fully polished 4-8-4's roaring across the countryside between Kimberley and De Aar.  This has to be among the best sequences ever filmed of big time, mainline steam in action.

I love this whole series and have always been disappointed it never seems to have made it on to DVD, at least that I've ever been able to find...

Those are really are beautiful 4-8-4s. To see them running full-speed in person, that would be a sight to behold.

If Scott Mann made one of these locomotives I would definitely be in for one! I would also be very interested in "the Blue train" or something from Rhodesian/Zimbabwe Railways. African railroads are sadly not given a lot of attention in our O gauge world.

I have not seen any VHS or DVD or this show which is quite a shame. I am sure it is out there  somewhere but it would probably be located in Europe. It took me 15 years to find a DVD of Scott McGregor's "Railway Adventures Across Australia" and I had to ship it from New Zealand. Good thing I have a region free DVD player!

We took that itinerary that also goes through Zimbabwe (and a dash into Zambia) a few years ago on ROVOS Rail.  A journey of a lifetime and highly recommended.

The series "Mighty Trains" (Smithsonian Channel) documents ROVOS Rail as well as other excellent rail journeys around the world.

Mighty Trains is a great show! I especially enjoyed "The Ghan" and "Maharajas' Express" episodes.

The ROVOS rail trip is on my bucket list
