Modern era Lionel used a two step pilot on their Geeps and Budd cars in the 1970's. The part was from the 627 "44 ton switchers".

Did they ever go back to using the three step pilot that postwar Lionel used? If so, what was the first engine to have the three pilot?

I stopped paying close attention to those kind of details by the mid-2000's, but I know that the postwar three-step pilot (2328-65) hadn't been used since pre-1970 at that point.

However, I did notice that the pilot design was brought back with the advent of the "Conventional Classics" in the late 2000's, which also saw the reintroduction of the postwar-style Geep frame and handrails. The part number for that pilot is 630-8304-652, but for some reason I'm thinking it might be die-cast metal? I could be wrong on that.

Also note that the two-step pilot was re-created in the late 1990's as the die-cast metal 610-8870-075 (painted black was -074). Maybe I'm confusing this one with the above?
