What year did 3rd rail make their version of the GN S2 4-8-4? And did it come with TMCC, RS, EOB etc? I did several internet searches (including 3rd rail's web site) and came up with nothing. Thanks!

Can't remember what year it came out, but they are conventional only, i.e long before TMCC and/or EOB.
For what it's worth, the MTH version is just as super detailed. My buddy picked one off the Bay, some years ago, and placed side-by-side with my MTH model, it is VERY difficult to tell them apart.
The Sunset/3rd Rail models show up on the Bay, fairly frequently (there is one on there now), but you rarely, if ever, see an MTH model for sale. Maybe MTH should rerun their model again, with different road numbers and maybe one in black.
I had the MTH here for a review (two rail version). It was one spectacular model! It was a long time ago - review is in the defunct OSN magazine.
Thanks for the quick reply Hot Water!
The 3rd Rail model shipped with QSI sound. I have the model that Hot Water discusses, and I had mine retrofitted with EOB.
If you are looking for one, e-mail me off list at jlzeman@comcast.net, and maybe we can work a deal.

Tried to get ours upgraded and the upgrader sent it back saying the vanderbuilt tender shape prevented them from mounting the boards ... darn.
Now it just sits on the shelf ....
The Sunset/3rd Rail GN S-2 was made in the 1995-98 time frame as I recall.

Great selection of the new MTH GN S-2's in the most recent catalog (2013 V. II)....including the black versions.
I picked up the 3rd Rail version a few years ago and installed TMCC, EOB, and a TAS turbo smoke unit and yes, the boards do fit. I love this engine, but I have also compared it to the MTH version that has since been issued and the MTH version is at least as good or better in terms of detail. The MTH version has a darker shade of green than the 3rd Rail version.
