Here is the layout - All Realtrax. All MTH lockons 1 TIU 3 Z1000 Bricks.

 

4 loops. The oval on the left is raised. The trolley wont be where it is in the pic, but it is good for these questions

 

The figure 8 and trolley will run on the variable channels. 1 bump and go trolley. 1 Lionel passenger set on the figure 8

1) Can I power the 2 variable channels with 1 Z1000?

2) Does it matter if I choose to power the figure 8, from the inside or outside on the opposite sides of the crossover?

 

The raised oval and the outer loop will beon separate channels all PS2 Engines. 1 Engine on oval, 2 engines on outer loop.

 

I am powering the outer loop with siding through an MTH terminal strip.

 

People talk about tying the common lines together. Where on this layout, would I do that? What is the advantage?

Yes.

No, it does not.

People talk about tying the common lines together. Where on this layout, would I do that? What is the advantage?

Typically, either at the Black output terminals of the TIU or at the entry to the terminal blocks connected to the output TIU channels. Do this after phasing all transformers with respect to each other.

 

The advantages are that you have continuity of Common to facilitate things like switch track automatic non-derailing operation and to guard against short circuits due to out of phase transformers.
