The pic OTD showing progress on the upper platform of The VintageHubby's new WIDE GAUGE/STANDARD GAUGE on-the-floor Basement Layout. A 42STD loop shows off the reproduction Lionel blue & silver 309, 311, and 312 passage car set, and an original 1835E & 1835W tender. The birch plywood is varnished, after being stained with General Finishes waterbased DYE STAIN. The Barclay soldier peeps and accessories are originals. Original blue lamps from Nation Wide Lines.
FOR TODAY: Local freight passes by the commuter station early this morning. No one even seems to notice the Pennsy A5 as it eases by the platform with its' bell clanging. Mrs. Bradford is taking her young son Luke to visit her aunt several station stops down the line, Seaman Chris Quigly is returning to his ship after a lengthy holiday leave, conductor Willis Hines will deadhead to Port Chesapeake where he will then be in charge of the FSJR flagship passenger train ... the Free State Flyer ... just another day on the railroad!

A question… is there some secret to getting the hatch off to access the switches??? Per the manual, I tried removing the rear hatch with the 3 fan units with no luck and I was afraid I would damage the paint Other than the run/program switch, I always turn off smoke!!!

Paul, you haven't lived until you've filled your train room with smoke from your steamers and smokin' diesels!
Just kidding, I know smoke is not for everybody, but it happens to be my favorite model train feature.
By the way, I don't smoke cigarettes, pipes or cigars or anything else, except as a young man I used to smoke a pipe. Used to put me in a nice meditative mood when studying in school or at my law office. Smart move for me to give up smoking by the time I was 30. Arnold
Sorry, Arnold, but the only smoke I’ve run recently is when I cranked up my old 637 steamer using one of the last smoke pellets which came with the set in the early 60’s. I will admit to trying the smoke on my VisionLine BigBoy when I first got it. The alternating puffs from the twin stacks was cool, and the whistle smoke was fantastic. Of course, I smelt the petroleum scent for several days after!!!
Paul, I'm no big spender so no Visionline for me, but I have a couple of Legacy locos including this NY Central 10 wheeler with whistle steam, which is my best locomotive:
Not cheap, but at the outer limits of my affordability at about $750. Also, runs well on my 031 curves and through my 022 switches. Arnold

Paul, the hatch w/the fans lifts up from the rear. You have to try to get your finger on the rear edge of the fan hatch & lift up. There are clips on the front edge of the hatch, so don’t try to lift from the front edge. It was hard the first time, but am able to lift off the hatch now w/not to much effort. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Craig. I guess I’m so used to the 4 little magnets!!! I did note some play in the hatch, but never would have guessed that there were clips. I won’t make it back home for a couple of weeks, but I’ll give your method a try. Thanks again.
Early morning around the lake in Paradise, CA. Fisherman returning from a successful early morning on the lake, the lake caretaker with a friend sitting on his mobile home patio enjoying some sun, the tail end of the Daylight leaving town, a early round of basket ball, and an SP SW8 rolling by heading to the ranch to pickup a load of cattle.

FOR TODAY: Almost quittin time. Horace is just about to climb back into his tractor and pull this loaded trailer to the REA distribution facility 3.5 miles down the road. Once there he will punch the clock and his week is done. Then he will hitch a ride with fork lift operator Elmer Seymour over to the Dynamo Diner where they will meet their wives for supper. Tonight is corned beef and cabbage night at the diner. Of course o'l Horace just loves him some cabbage! ... A couple of weeks ago when the diner was having the corned beef and cabbage special he ate way too much cabbage. Uh huh that right he did ... so much so that the Mrs. made him sleep down stairs on the couch with the window cracked open all weekend. Now that weekend on the couch may have taught o'l Horace a lesson, but don't you count on it. ... just another day on the railroad!
Working on detailing. Barclay soldiers and Manoil cannons on an original Standard Gauge Lionel 211 flat car. Two original American Flyer stations, AF and Lionel lamps, repro Lionel 300 series blue & silver passenger set.

Yep, Joe. 8 weeks is going on 8 months - all sorts of set backs I do get back home on the occasional weekend and that is usually related to a visit to Grzyboski’s to pick up something I ordered
I’m guessing a few more months until he is able to be independent again. I miss my trains and this forum keeps me in touch with what is really important
