Hey Guys,
Does Lionel sell just the Cab 2 remote by itself somewhere? The only thing I have found is the 993 which is the remote and charger base. I don't plan on leaving the remotes on the charger all the time due to the overheating battery issues I have heard about.
I'd like to have a spare remote for the guest room so people can play with the trains in their room while I am using the train in my room.

The #993 will not overheat the remote, it's a good investment. When it stops charging, it really stops charging. I come back the next day and the remote is room temperature, no issue at all with overcharging or overheating.
To answer your direct question, Lionel has never offered just the remote without the charging base ala 993 set.

Jeff is correct, you maybe able to find a 993 unit on the Bay for reasonable money however. No problems with the 993 unit over heating the Batteries that I know of.

You might also consider the Cab 1L remote for your guests to use, these are sold separately and have no need of a charger. They will work with the Legacy system and are much simpler to operate for the novice.

I have to make a decision here soon as to whether I am going to pick up a Cab1L and TMCC Base unit. What I am seeing is the 993 Legacy unit, is almost the same price as the Cab1L & Base.
What the Cab1L & Base would also give me is the ability to run my layout, especially my FTCC Switches, when my Legacy Cab2 is in for repairs, which has now happened for the 2nd time. If I simply pick up a Legacy 993 unit when the 990 goes in for repairs, I still loose my ability to control my FTCC Switches remotely.
If I can pick up a used Cab1L and TMCC Base for reasonable money and also acquire the 993 Legacy the same way, I intend to due so.

Just make sure you get a BASE 1L and not a TMCC Base as the CAB1L will not work with a TMCC base.

I had the 990 for a little over a year and it was back to Lionel I believe three times for repair. I give credit to Lionel for standing behind their product but the reliability was a problem for me. I replaced with the Cab 1L and have had no problems at all with this unit. I don't know if you will find the Cab 1L used but I see Charles RO has the Cab 1L Command set for $190.00.

Thanks much for the information on the Cab1L & Base 1L units. It almost seems like a man should own both the Legacy 990 and the Cab1L & Base1L. Hate to pass up the 993 Legacy unit also, it looks as if I can pick one up at a real good price.

What about the Lionel 994. You get the same remote plus the charger.
