Hi,

After cleaning my track yesterday, I noticed a build-up of crud on the non-traction tire wheels on my MTH FP-45 locomotive.  While I was able to clean off about a 1/3 of the wheels' circumference without a problem using some 99% ISO alcohol since it's facing up, there's still the remainder facing down (inward to the locomotive) that needs cleaning as well.  You can't "hand roll" the wheels around like you can on some of the old Lionel locomotives.

Page 13 of the MTH owner's manual provides a lot of detailed guidance here:  "Wheels and tires can be cleaned using denatured (not rubbing) alcohol applied with a cotton swab."   Well, that is truly informative.   (I'm sorry, my noo-jurzee sarcasm popped out there as I yet again re-read the part where the manual tells you what to do; not how to do it!)

Has anyone found an an easy technique for cleaning this particular locomotive's wheels all the way around without taking it half apart like you have to do when lubricating it (Pages 12 & 13) or changing its traction tires (Page 14) ?

(I've lubed this locomotive and changed its tires a few times in the past, so I know how to take it apart.  I'm just not looking forward to that hassle again if someone has a simpler method of cleaning the wheels.)

Thank you!

Turn the engine up side down in a soft, secure cradle. take a cloth wet with Goof Off or some other cleaning product like denatured alcohol.

Then from a transformer using an alligator clip and wire jumpered from the hot post to the roller pick up assembly. Leave that jumper wire in place.

Set the transformer to a slow speed, then with your index finger lay the cleaning cloth on the wheel in question. With your other hand take a second alligator clip jumper from the the return side of your transformer and gently touch any wheel that dose not have a traction tire on it in order to turn the motor and drive wheels slowly.

If you are cleaning a Lionel engine the motor will spin when you first make contact with the return wire, an MTH engine will come up in neutral so you may have to remove the return wire and replace it to get the engine to run.

Have fun and remember run you motor slowly untill you get use to the procedure.
