I am working on the design of my layout with RR-Track software and have been looking at various track manufacturers. I liked ScaleTrax a lot, but its availability seems to be limited. So I am down to choosing between Gargraves or Atlas O. I want to use Ross Custom Switches as they seem to have a great variety. I know that the Ross Switches and the Gargraves track are made to fit together and look alike. I am wondering if anyone has ever used Ross Custom Switches with Atlas O track? If you have, do you like it? Recommend it? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

While I have not used Atlas with Ross track/switches, they are compatible. All you need to do to join them together is to remove the clip on the end of the Atlas track, move the first tie on the Ross switch a bit towards the other ties. This allows the Atlas and Ross to join without it looking odd. The Atlas rail joiners are a perfect fit to the Ross rail profile. The ties are the same height, so there will be no bump at the joint between the two.

I can tell you the Ross/Atlas track at the McCormack-Stillman RR Park in Scottsdale looks great and is quiet. I don't know about their experience with it though, but they have 1250 SF of it running, so I guess it's been good. I believe they mostly use Atlas flextrack though, not sectional.

My problem with ScaleTrax is it doesn't readily connect, though according to "Russell" here, it will "line up" with a thin layer of roadbed underneath. It is limited to 4 choices of curves, but then it arguably has the best/easiest FlexTrax to work with. It also has a low profile, so it might be problematic with some wheel-sets. It does look great in the Black Diamond videos and the shop layouts I saw in Miami FL and Burbank CA last year. My LHS won't stock it though because of all the returns by those who didn't follow the directions on how to install it. I want to use it, but I don't think I'm willing to risk getting frustrated with installation. Since I'm stuck with some O42 curves, I'll probably go with Ross/GG and haven't decided yet if I'll try to bend GG flex or just use sectional curves, probably the latter.

We have used Ross switches for yards, because they are tighter than using Atlas O and some of the specialty switches like double cross overs and four-ways..... The connecting pins that are used to join Atlas to Ross work fine, no problem.... On the mainlines, I still prefer to look of the Atlas O #5's and #7's particularly in pairs..... I just installed several on this new layout and they look terrific and work really well.....

We use Atlas track for new alignments at the club and it joins perfectly with Ross turnouts. DO NOT use the Atlas adapter pins. Cut the stringers from the end ties on the Ross turnout, slide the end ties back a bit and use regular Atlas track joiners.

Here are some shots of Jeff Waldman (sphillyj) and me cutting a crossover (2 Ross 11-degree/#5 right-hand) into the mains (Atlas-O).
