My MTH j 611 railsound model 1105 has a binding issue with the worm gear assembly arm that plunges in and out of the’steam chest’ portion of the loco. When disconnected I gingerly attempted to articulate the arm manually to see if there is any movement. It is bound up, my question would be to learn how to free up this movement or another remedy to help this move freely in and out under normal circumstances.IMG_4820

So to clarify, it’s just the piston and rod that are stuck in the smoke unit bore? ….can you rotate the flywheel by hand now and verify the rest of the driveline is ok? ……if it’s just the smoke piston stuck, more than likely some old smoke fluid has turned to varnish and has gummed up the works. Most of the time the jam is minor, and a little twisting and pulling gets the piston moving again. Best to remove the piston from the bore, clean all the parts and re-assemble. If there’s an O ring on the piston, remove it and discard it, ….leave it off, it’s not necessary. …..I can’t remember if MTH used an O ring on the piston or not.
