I'm trying to start up my Atlas SW-9 and sometimes it doesn't respond at all but when I can get it to start up and move it loses all power and stops. I took the shell off to reset the boards and noticed that when I power it on and move the shell around thats when it quits. I inspected the wiring for obvious shorts but don't see anything. It does the same thing in both conventional and TMCC mode. What could be the problem? It was NOS when I got it.

I just figured out a similar issue with a Lionel S-2. The wheels were so heavily blackened from the factory, they would not pick up power on a steady basis. I cleaned them and made sure both common rails were connected. That solved the issue.

Connector wires have been known to have issues. If the issue is shell on or off, the connectors need to be inspected closely. G
Wow thanks Tom. That was exactly the problem, so weird they would blacken the wheels that much. I actually had to sand it off with 600grit paper and now it works great.
I feel for you. I have two legacy prr g7's and one kept stalling out at certain places. What could it be, I wondered, data signal issue, shorting, deadspots? But other trains no such problems. Heh, cleaned the wheels, runs like a champ now. Was out thinking myself for a while on that one.
