The Atlas switch machine is not their greatest contribution to the hobby IMO. I started using the Z-Stuff DZ-1000's a while ago for "no doubt about it" reliability but also have quite a few of the Atlas machines around my layout. Some snap back and forth like the day they were installed but others seem to lose capability over time until they more or less quit. Is this a wear-out failure or is there a way to get them working like new again? Thanks!

Great topic, I’ve had 10 Atlas O switches since 2001, some work great, some move slow but get to their destination. I recently bought some good used Atlas O switch machines from a forum member, I have extras if you need any. The new Atlas O switches are a lot better. When I began having issues, I replaced the Atlas with Ross Custom switches using DZ1000 motors. They all work via the Lionel Command Control System with the Cab 2 and Cab 1L remotes…. I set every DZ1000 switch machine to Non-Derailing. I love Atlas O track. Happy Railroading
If I had the energy and physical ability now, I'd replace all my switch machines with Tortoise switch machines as well, I'm sure I'd be much happier with their performance.
Any threads on the Tortoise switch machines installation and the ones with DCC? I am using 2 rail with DCC

I also am using 2 Rail with DCC. There are Tortoise switch machines with DCC built in? I have never heard of this. Some time ago I remember reading about a DCC circuit you could add on to the Tortoise. There may not be information about this here but there must be loads of info on it in the HO world.
From the responses I gather that when your Atlas Switch machine stops working it's time to get a better switch. I have a friend that uses the tortoise machines. They are under the table and out of sight which is cool. And I think they also move more slowly/deliberately than other machines which is more realistic. I'll stick with the DZ-1000's as my replacement. Thanks for the replies.
