Blast Furnace Recent Photo

The furnace, with all of the top detail, is about 47" tall.  The bench height is about the same.  I'm not sure what the footprint is.  The cast house and furnace housing have been very compressed.  The furnace is scale.

 

Cost has been minimal.  The I beams, stairs,ladders and trusses are Plastruct.  Most everything else is just stuff I had laying around.  Wood. paper, tile. TIG rod, PVC, spray foam, fibreglass etc.

I finished the blower house this weekend.  This structure would have housed giant air pumps for mill operations.My corner is running out of room so I did this as a flat.  It is mostly masonite, plexi-glass and a little marble tile.  The windows are Rusty Stumps.

that is just a fantastic model.  I lived in Pittsburgh too long to ever want to see a steel mill again, so you won't see one on my layout soon, but it's a really nice model. 

The highest compliment I can give is that it's museum quality!

I am in total agreement with Alan's assessment....David, you can come work on my layout anytime you want!!...

The facility has taken on an aura of reality rarely achieved on model railroads of any scale let alone O scale. Your railroad in that area does not look like a three rail model, it looks quite real. I would also like to compliment your photography. You captured the feeling as well as the detail.

Actually, USW has been locked-out in a labor dispute that started several weeks ago.  I believe I heard they are near agreement on a new deal, however.

I started adding lighting to the mill.  Some are incandescent but I've been using OGRE LEDs lately and really like them!

The OGRE lights are made by Rick Baugh, who also happens to be a great modeler.  You might know Rick from the Scenic Express booth at York.  

 

These LEDs come 4 to a package and can run on AC or DC.  A rectifier/resistor comes with the lights.

 

I'm sure Scenic Express will have these at York.  You can also contact Rick via email or if you happen to be in Mercer, we have them at the shop.

The whole mill scene sure looks great!  The lights are just the ticket for an industrial building like yours.  They remind me of what I saw in my years at power stations too.  Lee has a point about the sky color, in the September 21st photos, but yesterday's photos look more grayish blue.

Great Job, are we running trains at your house soon?
