Ralph, the Seaboard and Chessie units do look sharp together!!!  They brought to mind a discussion on Facebook yesterday among folks from our rural high school back in the late '60s and early '70s.  Then my Wife started playing Chicago's "Color My World" on the piano just as I started to type my message to you.   I feel like I am 18 again!!    Oh no that isn't so...the arthritis has really been giving me fits lately!

A week or two ago I mentioned that I bought a lot of five AMT aluminum

passenger cars to get two of the ones I needed. I was looking at them setting

on my shelf earlier. The baggage car was particularly dirty and was one of

the ones I did not need. So I decided it could be an experiment car. I was doing

a load of dishes  so in it went. ( I have experimented with the dishwasher

before, really great for track, switches, heat stamped plastic cars, plasticville, really

bad for Marx tin litho cars, marx rubber stamped cars, american flyer

tin stations.) Anyway, the car survived the dishwasher quite well. I put it back on

the shelf, but then noticed that it was lower on one end than the other. The cause

was not immediately obvious, so out came the screwdriver. (I should not be allowed

screwdrivers). I took the trucks off and still did not notice anything obvious. So then

I started to disassemble the car. Bad Move! There is obviously a sequence that these

things went together and how they should come apart so now I have a body, a frame

and a baggie full of pieces. The culprit was one of the trucks, some one had take

it apart and put it back together with the mounting bracket upside down. Ah well,

all into a box and a project for another time.

I received these in the mail over the last couple of days. I'm not sure of their actual origins, but I believe the caboose might be an old Atlas model, and I think the tank car is a Lionel model converted to 2-rail.

Either way, they cost me very little and already have Kadee's fitted.

The tank car was in blue and lettered for "Union", but I gave it a blast of black from a rattle can and will letter it as soon as I can spare the time.

OK, so "lately" is now relative as I've been super busy with school work, but these are still "cool" to me.  I adore my Atlas Railbox car, but alas the wheels bind on my tight MTH track curves. Hence, I also have the less attractive Lionel version in bright cartoon yellow :-). The two Railbox cars illustrate different paint schemes, which is nice.

At one point I was thinking of taking a Dremel tool to the plastic on the underside of the Atlas car (on the left) that's causing the binding -- as it is slight -- but I haven't the nerve yet.  It seems like too nice a car to risk.  I also think that the Lionel car will be perfect for my first foray into weathering as time allows.  The plastic is actually see-through if held up to the light (!) and needs some road dirt to hide that.

Some more fun stuff below.  When I run out of room for O scale items that I "just gotta have", I turn to N.  The engine in the green box is a sweet little B&M but it has a voltage restriction that requires care when running.  The mini-glue gun is to keep the track in place on my portable Gatorboard "layout", which now has three loops representing Mass., NH, and ME jaunts.  I was disappointed at how clumsy the glue gun was for simple tacking, but with some clean-up, it did the trick.  In time, I'm sure I'll find other projects for it.
