I purchased this set after waiting over 2 years since it was ordered. The set is currently somewhere between here in Illinois and Legacy Station, so I haven't seen the set in person yet. I've seen videos on YouTube and there's one thing that concerns me.  

 

Whoever has has this engine, please answer this question. DOES THE STRIPE ON THE TENDER, LINE UP WITH THE ENGINE? Check this out when your engine and tender are setting on a shelf or a level piece of track. I sure hope I'm Seeing things. 

 

Every video I watched it's painfully obvious that the stripe on the tender is TOO HIGH when lined up with the engine. Thanks for any info. A photo would be great!

Looks like all you guys who've complained about Lionel's 18" passenger car  "windows" now have something else to focus on.  

 

FWIW, this has been "mismatched" for quite some time now.  It was like this on the TMCC version of 611J.  And not surprisingly also on the Legacy 612J, which was produced at the same time as the Legacy 611J that's packaged in the Pocahontas Set.

 

Can't say it ever really bothered me... But then neither did "the windows".

             Nice youtube channel you've earned your 101st subscriber, keep up the good work! How's Legacy Station's prices? I live up in Mass so Charles Ro is the major train store. I also dealt with Gyrzyboski last week and bought some more diesel engines.

 

As for the Pocohantes, I don't have the set, but it's one of my favorites along with the ESE and Commodore Vanderbilt!

Brian has treated me very well! I ordered this set when it first came out and prepaid 10% down. A year later I got tired of waiting and cancelled my order. Brian refunded my deposit. He also promised to call me when he got the set to check and see if I still might want it. I got a call 2 weeks ago. I declined. After watching the videos on YouTube and hearing the sounds, I called him Tuesday and he shipped it right out. He could have sold the set to me for a higher price but he held to the prepay amount. I'm very happy! Sure glad I didn't see the high stripe before I bought it. Can't say what I would have done. I own 2 606 engines w/ tenders. If it will work, I may swap one of the shells. 

Here is my 606. Not bad, but, a little off.

Along with the plan (previous post) showing how the top of the cab should be higher than the top of the tender, judging by the line of the bottom of the cab compared to the stoker motor, it looks like the rear of the cab is too low and could use some raising.

Any mis-match is harder to see from this angle. Note the correct roll-top tender for the 606. ( Bug-eye class lights waiting to be replaced)

I'm very doubtful we'll see a "fix" -- especially since the stripe mismatch has existed now for several Lionel scale J's.  Although I agree it would look much better with the stripe on the loco and tender aligned correctly.

 

Like with the recent California Zephyr being delayed for so long, I think Lionel was just glad to get the Pocahontas set finally out the door -- the difference here being the quality of the aluminum passenger cars seems to be similar to Lionel's production runs of 7-10 years ago.

The later Js including the 611 did not have spoked wheels. 
 
My set is scheduled for delivery on Monday. I'm going to look at what can be done to get the alignment right. 
 
Glad to to hear you got a set leapinlarry, even with all of the quirks I'm looking forward to mine. 
 
2015 is a great year for the 611! I've been waiting 21 years to experience her steam again!

Of the original 14 that were built by the N&W only the 611 still exists and currently is under restoration at Spencer (North Carolina) at the North Carolina Transportation Museum.  During her former career in excursion service 1982-1994 she ran many, many excursion all over the NS system, and after her rebuild is complete she will operate in excursion service again on a smaller scale.

 

As for the stripe issue it appears in the photos/video that the cab is sitting low, as for the stripe which may be slightly high...who knows.  But I would first try raising the rear of the engine and seeing how it looks first.

Since these die cast model are fairly ridged and the drive wheel axles are not sprung, in the process of trying to raise the rear of the engine, one just might be lifting the rear driver set off the rails. Remember that the trailing truck on these model does not support any engine weight, and is pretty much "along for the ride" so to speak.

The fact that the historical engine still exists is really cool! Also, does anyone have an idea why Lionel would misalign the J Class stripe?

Maybe cause there quality control is lacking? I am not a mth fan either 97% of my engines are lionel.. Just the truth ..

That's insane how about they fix it right ...After all it's a 1600 set or a 1100 engine ..I mean really . Am I the only one that's tired of fixing factory defects?

I have the scale #611 J TMCC version from around 2005. To my eyes, the stripes are lined up perfectly.

Here's a shot  with tender uncoupled to draw it closer..
