Anyone have a suggestion for a tool or a procedure to remove the flywheel and worm gear from a can motor ? I have a MTH 2-6-0 with a cooked can motor. I have found the same motor on line for $5 but it doesn't come with the flywheel or worm gear.  $60 for a used but complete one.

Thank you.

You can try what I did. I had an 0-8-0 that had a fried motor. Find a nail set (punch) or a piece of had steel bar the same diameter as the motor shaft.  Chuck it into a drill press or arbor press, hold the motor with a locking plier or position it on the drill press table with 2 pieces of steel between the motor and the flywheel.  Push down with all your might to pull the flywheel off the shaft,  slow and steady does it. Since the flywheel is brass it will come off.

The worm gear is much tougher to get off.  I damaged mine trying.  Since the motor is trashed, I might suggest heating the gear as hot as possible with a torch and maybe the gear will slide off after being expanded by the heat.

I'll tell you how I get worms off bad motors.  I simply pound the shaft opposite the worm a bit to expose some of the armature shaft next to the worm.  Then I use my Dremel to cut the shaft and free the worm. I place the worm with the shaft facing down on my large vise and use a pin punch to pound out the shaft.  Works great.

To press the worm onto to a new motor, you will need to heat the worm and support the shaft on the opposite side of the motor.  NEVER use the motor case to support the assembly when pressing on a gear or the flywheel, you must ONLY use the actual armature shaft to support it.  It's very easy with little force to ruin a motor by sliding the commutator assembly on the armature shaft if you support it by the motor case.

Worms are difficult to remove/replace, the flywheels are typically very easy.

The best thing is to send the bad motor to Frank Timko at timkorepairdepot.com

He has the motors, the tools, the experience and the expertise to do the job.

Definitely second using Frank Timko.  I tried to remove the worm gear but could see it was only bending the gear puller.  I send Frank my motor.  He sent back a new motor with my flywheel and worm in about 2 weeks.  It cost less than buying a used one.
