When I decide to purchase a new tinplate locomotive I always elect for the open frame traditional motor setup.  I just like the simplicity of the mechanics that produce the motion to move train.  There were a couple of times when purchasing a traditional version of something just wasn’t possible and I felt that I had to settle for a PS2 or PS 3 version of a locomotive that I wanted to add to my collection – namely my Brute.

Now before I’m dragged into the town square to be torched to death, I want to state that the Brute is a fantastic locomotive and, even though it’s cumbersome and certain aspects on a layout may need to be changed to accommodate its size and heft, it’s definitely a crowd pleaser and an attention getter.  But I’m thinking about changing its Can Motors out for a more traditional Open Frame Motor and possibly add a third Open Frame Motor in the middle.

Looking through the archives there were some forum members who stated that if MTH made the Brute in a traditional version the problem would have been producing an E unit to hold up to the voltage/wattage that would have been needed to maintain/switching direction(s).

Is it possible to add some Open Frame Motors to the Brute and would motors from, let’s say, a 400E work?

If you are just trying to get away from Proto Sounds, the best way is to put in a simple reverse unit from Dallee.

You might have to do some machining to change the motors.

Sometimes people come up with ideas like this, but do not explain exactly why they want to go there. If you can say what you actually want to accomplish, there may be a much simpler solution.

In other words, why do you want to change the basic design of the loco and what do you hope to accomplish in the end?

Thank you all for your input.  After doing some much needed research and reading the comments here and talking with others about this, I've decided to leave my Brutes as they are.  More than likely the project would have a lot of trouble, now that I think about it, and probably wouldn't haven't yielded the final product results that I wanted, which is truly a very traditional Brute without the modern electronics that make it go.

ROYBOY - What I was really after was a Brute in the most traditional sense possible.  Open frame motors, ozone and everything that goes along with it.  I love the simplicity of the train without the electronics.

HAPPY PAPPY - My Brutes are in brand new condition and to take them apart to accomplish this would more than likely been more than I was prepared to deal with.  My Brutes will stay exactly as they are but I will be on the hunt for something a lot more used that I could tinker/experiment.

HOJACK - Now you've given me food for thought.  Live pantographs!  I've had LGB trains in the past and am familiar with the pantograph system that LGB uses.  The idea seems very promising and I'll you know how I make out.

Thank you all for your comments.  Much appreciated!!!
