I have MTH 20-2293-1 sharknose engines with PS-2 (released in 2001). The engine horn and bell sounds are really bad. Is it possible to load a new sound set from a later version such as MTH 20-2726-1 (released in 2006)?

Is the one you have 5V or 3V boards? You can tell by the charging jack shape.
No jack is old 5V.
The sound file must be for the same voltage board.
The Voltage is in the sound file name as well.
After a jump to the MTH website, your engine appears to be 5V per the sound file avail for download.
The 20-2726-1 file appears to be for 3V boards.
So it looks unlikely, unless I'm mistaken in the file ID for voltage.
Russell is correct. You cannot put the 20-2726-1 sound file in the 20-2293-1 model because one is 3v and the other is 5v.

Check the MTH site for a revised file for the model you have. I have the early PRR Shark and there was another file release that improved the sound, and as I remember, may have corrected on of the functions.
I have that set and the sounds are decent to me. Is your sound distorted? Your speaker will have bad flaking on it if that is the case. All those early speakers are going bad and it might not be your sound file.
My bell sound is clear but it sounds like a cow bell. The horn is ok.
I intend to load a sound set from the MTH website for the MTH 20-2293-1 to see if there is any improvement.
I may also replace the speaker. Does anyone have a suggested replacement which will provide a better quality sound?
I would put a new 16 ohm speaker in first. Your problem is common. Did you change the bell settings at all. You might look at that.
