Well I was looking for a coal tower to go over my two main lines on the layout. I wanted one like you would see on the pennsylvania railroad on Norfolk and western railroad. I couldn't find a kit for what I wanted. Well then in my work shop I spotted it my new coal tower. There was A funnel sitting on a bucket. It was just about the right sizes I was looking for. So brought it down to the layout sat it there looked it over the bucket was little to small. I looked around and found a pretzel bucket we were using for donations. It Was just Wright. So I cut the bucket up to fit then cut funnel out at top to build building structure up top for coal elevator. Then I had to finger out what I was going to use for the bottom base. Took 3/4 plywood and got an old tunnel portal and traced out openings for the trains. Now it was looking like some of the pictures I was looking at. Well I wrapped the pretzel bucket with one inch masking tape at deferment thickness right above each other to look like pored concrete. The plywood base I brushed plaster on with paint brush to look like concrete. Then painted it with woodland scenic concrete paint. Then I had to build calling elevator to fill tower made it out of 1/4 wood and wrapped it in masking tape as well. Now still working on the details. Will show them as I go along.

Then built a foundation and coal pit for elevator and conveyor.

still working on details.

Hi guys.

 THANK YOU for the complements

It's can be amazing what you can do with things laying around when you put your mind to it. I have aways wanted a big over the track coal tower for a two track main line.

You see pic of these big monsters but no kits out on the market.

Lionel did a single track one. I needed to build a monster two main line coal tower to fit the layout. It's been a great project.

Richard your coal tower looks great nice job.

Harry,

You did a fantastic job!  No one could tell what you used for the main structure if you didn't have the before photos.

I always like seeing ordinary items used in modeling.  My first exposure was seeing someone in a magazine back in the late '60s spray painting Kodak Instamatic Camera flash cubes gray or silver and using them upside down as gondola loads.  Three fit nicely in an HO gondola.  I had an Instamatic, so I did just that.  I see commercial O gauge loads that remind me of the old flash cube.  I used a plastic pop bottle as the cylinder for a water tower once, the old style with the conical roof.  That's a pretty common item modelers have used.  Mine was broken in a move and discarded 20 years ago.

When I posted it I wanted people to know that you can make some of you nicest buildings out of things we have laying around the house or garage.
It makes for a good challenge.to be creative.with what you got or want.
But this it what the hobby is about being creative and enjoying what you do.
I like to challenge my self with new projects. Keeps my mind going

I couldn't agree more with your statement.  It's so rewarding to make something no one else owns, or to know you have the ability to make anything you want-buildings, rolling stock, locomotives, etc.

Beautiful layout also.
