Below is a hand sketch of my 6' x 16' Fastrack layout. Before I proceed further, do you have any suggestions to improve this design. My main interest is passenger trains, however the "yard and siding" on the front side could allow some switching. (I might add one more turnout for a spur off the inside oval.) I positioned all the turnouts on the front side of the table, plus I have at least one section of straight track on either side of each turnout to help eliminate derailments. All turnouts are 060. The track is all laid and operational, however it is not permanently fastened down. (Running TMCC powered by MTH Z-4000.)

Are the turnouts well-placed connecting the 048 and 060 ovals, or should they be reversed and/or placed closer together? I am open to any and all suggestions from more experienced layout designers.

Thanks,

Bill

Hmm...I could add another foot of plywood along the length of the table, making it 7' wide, to accommodate an 072 outside oval. Thanks for the good idea.

I'll add one thing, the switch location looks generally good but make sure you have one 10" or longer straight between the curve and the switch. This will reduce derails a lot. I'd go more but the longer the distance between sets of switches, the better I like them. Optimally the straight is the length of the longest car or engine crossing it.

Russell,

I do have a 10" straight on either side of the crossover switch curves. I broke down and bought two more switches to create two spurs within the inside loop- one leading into an engine shed and the other to place rolling stock (this one may evolve into a reverse loop if I buy yet another switch!) The trolley line has been temporarily removed but may get reinstalled as an elevated line.

Inner and outer loops on a single grade make for simple multiple train operation, but may get old and boring in time. I'd consider having one of the lines go up a grade to cross a bridge or go down a grade to go into a tunnel, to then reappear on the other side of your layout. Multi-level "dogbone"-style track plans can be complicated to design, but Fastrack does let you try the designs very easily.
