I've been offered a 1990s MTH engine with the conventional DCRC QSI electronics with the whistle (not PS1 from what I know).

Since it isn't PS1, do these electronics still need the battery and have the "quirks" of PS1, especially with batteries. Are they pretty bulletproof?

Any overall comments? I'm likely going to accept the offer but just want to see what I'm dealing with as I haven't touched a PS1 engine since the PS1 days!

James,

Back in the day you could buy the QSI 2000 top board. It was basically a very early PS1. They were only made less than six months. There are many QSI 2000 sound systems out there. They only drawback is the Z4K required to set up the programming. If I were a lot younger I would buy nothing but the QSI systems for my conventional trains. If I were not a devoted tinplate junkie.
