Got a little curious after some discussion in the ES44 pilots thread, and had a closer look at a few of my engines.

Here is the ES44, which I also posted in that thread. Definitely integral to the truck casting and not removable:

Here is the SD45, also not removable:

But, here is an Alco S2. Removable!

Very cool!

So maybe it is the four wheel vs. six wheel trucks, or maybe it just varies from model to model. Still, it's great that they are headed in that direction, at least with some locos.

No doubt.  Absolutely agree.  I think it's like you stated, it's a model by model basis, and something that might find it's way into new tooling, etc.   We just need to keep asking for these kinds of options, because ultimately it would be easier for companies like MTH to stock one set of p/n for truck assemblies, but have the flexibility to remove 3R features and perform scale wheel enhancements like mounting standard kadee gearbox, move in the sideframes in a consistent manner, etc.

In terms of the 3R loop, I find that I can clip the loop off of the truck block, grind or file the remnants flat/flush and touchup paint faster then likely taking apart a truck, removing wheelsets, reassembly, etc. So I really don't mind them as I prefer not to have yet another opening in the truck block so that crap can find it's way into the internal gears.

Yeah, I did notice that in the case of the removable boss, it does leave a small opening into the truck, but I think the only exposed internal part is the shaft of the front axle. The worm gear and its reservoir are still enclosed.
