You could do this with a 24VDC relay,bridge rectifier and capacitor. With DCS add a choke. I run conventional and use a separate 24VDC power supply for relay power made with an 18 volt brick,a bridge rectifier and capacitor. When charged to peak this is 24VDC.

 

Conventional

You could do it with a 5 volt relay hooked to a 7805 regulator circuit.

I agree about the cap.... As I mentioned I tried to use a large BR hooked to the accessory posts  (D&E if I remember correctly)  with my trusty KW as a DC power supply. Turn table motor etc.,  Maybe also  tortoise switch machines. This part worked but had nothing to do with the track.

 

I also tried feeding one side of the created  dc  to power track side relays  by letting one side of the dc - ride on the outside rail. The other side of dc + went directly to the dc relay.....  Wheels completed circuit. It just didn't  work  . Eventually  I had  to use a BR at each relay.. Yes with caps to prevent wheel chatter.   Phasing issue??

 

Is this similar ??? 

If you use a separate transformer you need only 1 bridge rectifier regardless of the number of relays. Just share one of the polarized bridge terminals with the track common,the minus for example.

I run over 300 relays on my layout with this method,powered by a lionel 180w brick. It works.
