I painted a PW 2032 gloss black for decal application.  I used Scalecoat II on the plastic shell.  The finish is somewhat patchy over areas that I put plastic filler and sanded with 1000 grit.  I feel that I need to prime it before recoating, but I'm afraid to prime directly over gloss paint. I'm in no mood to completely remove the paint a third time. (first the original and the second Testor's gloss black that orange peeled (perhaps due to applying in sunlight)).

I was thinking of a quick wash in TSP. If I do this I will let the paint dry for 48 hours first.  I know that I could sand it, but there are many fine recesses that could not be gotten to.

Any thought?  Any alternatives to TSP?

Thanks,

Alan

Of course you can spray primer over the paint. Gloss paint makes no difference. Get a scotch brite green pad  and lightly scuff the paint first. If you can find Tamiya primer that would be ideal as it does not build up and will not attack any kind of paint. I would NOT use testor's enamel primer. Let the black paint dry a minimum of 3 days before you paint over it. Follow direction for what ever primer you use.

Hi Rattler21,

I couldn't find a direct email for you on the forum.  You can contact me at somc49@hotmail.com.  Thanks for the offer.

Actually, I think that I solved my problem.  I got a hold of Weaver and discussed my issue with the paint tech.  First, I do not have to degloss the paint before putting a primer or second coat on it.  After the discussion the choice was to put another black coat on it or prime it first.  In order to help whatever caused the blotches in the first place not to come through we decided it would be safest to prime.  I'll be using Tamiya paint to prime which is compatible with enamels and lacquers.

Thanks for your suggestions,

Alan
