About 2 years ago my son and I built a layout for a older friend.  It consisted of 2 loops in a dog bone shpe.  It is 16ft long but he could still spare 2 ft to add. So we made a 20 inch wide sexton and long story short we are adding a stream in the middle.  The framework is 1 by4s pine. The bed is 1/4inch hardiboard primed then painted with some blues greens and browns. The shiny top layer is a light cover for recessed lights in a drop ceiling.  Liquid nails holds it all in place. The banks are layers of pink foam and drywall mud. When my son gets home from school he will paint the banks. Will update with photos when installed but here are a few during progress. Nick

I used a very sharp utility knife to score the back while using a drywall T square as the straight edge. I marked where to cut buy using painters blue tape. You need to be careful with the edges because they can split. Hope this helps.  Nick
