Still experimenting with my new Panasonic DMC LX-100 Lumix camera.  Here are some more Roanoke scene photos below.

I will post separately photos of the Prosperity, WV and York Fork scenes using the same camera.

Hope you enjoy, and wishing everyone a good weekend!

That is indeed your Y-3, Marty! That particular Lionel model is by far the most sure-footed steam locomotive ever made. It effortlessly winds its way through every turnout, switch, and odd curve on my layout, never derailing or stalling. That’s why I have four of them. Along with the N&W 2-6-6-2 they are the perfect engine for heavy switching and mine runs.

Bruce,

Thank you again.  I will take some pictures of the Duckunder Coal & Coke #2 facility next time.  It is a very old mine and tipple that still uses donkeys and mules to haul the mine carts from shaft to tipple and doesn't do any sorting.  All its output is mine-run coal mainly serving southern road hoppers like SR, the original NS, L&N, ACL, and SAL.

will, are you hand holding the camera?  if you are, you may want to get a tripod, which would enable you to shoot at slower speeds with a smaller f stop for greater depth of field.  looks to me like it is shooting wide open.

also, i bet you are using autofocus.  if so, you need to be careful about what is between you and your subject.  in one shot, i think it focused on the telephone wires.  again, with a tripod, you could manual focus.

Forrest,

Always great to hear from you and hope you are doing well!

Thanks for the tips. Yep, I began in 1964 taking railroad photos using a Kodak Retina Reflex SLR that didn’t have an internal light meter. I had to estimate every shot and adjust the F stops and shutter speeds accordingly. I quickly learned how to adjust for depth of field. The little Lumix is a joy to operate compared to that, and I have been using the automatic settings on purpose to see what results I get (like the telephone wires in focus). As I keep taking photos, I will use the manual settings.

Putting it on a tripod, however, is tricky because so many of the scene interiors require me to bend into awkward positions while balancing over or in a scene. Handheld shots will likely be required except for places where the best opportunities are right on the edge of the layout. I’ll keep working at it!

Best,

Will
