EM-1 Driveshaft Repair (proper forum this time)

I called Lionel last week and they said we'll send you a RMA.  But instead of an RMA I find in my inbox a "we don't have this part [??? I didn't ask for a part, I asked for a repair???], call Brasseur Trains".  Not even sure that is correct, but anyway I tried Brasseur . It was early Saturday morning and they weren't open yet, so I used the contact form instead of calling.

And haven't heard back.  Now maybe I messed up the return address, will call when I get a chance.  But does this even sound right?--- is it now the repair is done at Brasseur for real?

In any case, I was 50/50 on doing this myself.  So beyond the above questions, can you guys who did it yourselves (re)post your approaches?  I am torn between just JBWelding it and seeing how long that lasts (right up to the point that I am trying to impress a large group of people with my layout would be my guess per Col Murphy )  or putting a proper pin thru it.

The problem is if I mess it up (and I am not a machinist) then it's my problem, so it did seem worth giving Lionel twenty bucks for it to be their problem.

But that may not be an option anymore...

If the universal is intact and just slipping, the old fix was to install a setscrew. You could probably use a little bit of the wicking green Loctite instead. I'm assuming this is the TMCC one. I have this engine and I've never slipped it and can't tell if mine's been repaired. Certainly hasn't been setscrewed. I would not recommend JB Weld for this.

Lionel does not do repairs on engines that are out of warranty. That em1 is 20 years old.

If they did, 20 bucks wouldn't even cover the shipping Lol!

They referred you to Brassuers because they do general train repairs. There are other folks on this forum that can do the repair or help you do it yourself as well.

Yup not bothered by them not repairing something this old, but they should update the parts description which still says that Lionel will repair it for $20.   And although it didn't bother me, it wasted a lot of their service person's time.

Thanks for the thread.  I do think I will take the first shot with super glue.  I share a property boundary with a machine shop, they do NASA work so this is a little beneath them so if that doesn't work I'll think ask for a neighborly favor.  I'm not confident that I, even with my beloved little drill press, trust myself with a one-shot-get-it-right set screw update.
