I figured it was time to get around and start doing all the maintenance and upgrades to my older locomotives I've been thinking of doing. So an engine cradle would be a good thing to start with. With my wife into crafty stuff, I figured I had enough materials around the house to make one. How many of you have made one, or bought one? What "features" should I include, or you wish yours had?

Commercial packages of ice cream cones are wrapped in a nice foam liner. The store throws them away. Ask around. price is $0.
The engine cradle I use at the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum is an old foam pillow.
Take the outer case off and let it sit on the workbench. It cradles all steam and diesel engines and long passenger cars with ease.
good luck

I have a few Bowser foam cradles and I love em. Have all the sizes
I bought the Bowser cradle years ago when they first came out. I'm on my second one now and about ready to replace it with a new one.
I made mine out of a high density foam packing material. Came from some electronics I bought a couple years ago. I hot glued it to a piece of Masonite board to add some strength to it. Then glued the sides on.
Later on I did the cut outs on the sides because many diesels that had sun shades and other detail, would be smashed and therefore could be damaged by the side foam. My cradle is 18 inches long.
The thicker, density of the foam holds up well and does a great job of protecting my engines and cars.

I use a cradle from a PC. Remember them? I use packing bubble wrap with small bubbles for the resting place for the engine r car I am working on.
I use a couple of foam packing pieces from something we bought, probably a TV. They have a perfectly sized slot for holding locos.
I use the Bowser O and G blue foam cradles. The G doubles for standard gauge as well! :-)
HINT: Line the Bowser cradles with a folded trash bag and keep them away from UV light for more longevity!
Thanks all for the replies. We are moving at work, and I found a foam panel that they were going to toss, so I claimed it and will use it to make a cradle out of.
