I have been to the area severl times, the last time was last November and it has been my experience that most trains run in afternoons and nights.  Did see one each way at the draw bridge, which is pretty rare....One thing we do on every trip is ride Tri-Rail, best ride for the money.  We go from Opa Locka to Palm Beach.  Since alot of it has been double tracked and has cement ties installed, it is a pleasant trip.  The Amtrak station in Hollywood is a good place to watch trains...

Many years ago, when I lived in Ft. Ldle., and worked for the Ft. Ldle Fire Dept., FEC ran on the tracks that parallel Dixie Hwy., and SCL ran on the tracks that are adjacent to I-95.  Never failed that we'd be on the wrong side of the tracks when a call came in for anything other than a dumpster fire!

Ft. Lauderdale mainly sees FEC trains going to the port of Miami or west to the sand or rock mining area near the FL turnpike out in western Broward county.

You may see a Norfolk Southern on FEC tracks thru Ft. Lauderdale, as I see NS going south thru Stuart FL to Miami.

If you are looking for trains try the tracks that parallel I-95; CSX and Amtrak run on that line.

I did have a good trip and caught a few FEC trains as well as some of the Tri Rail commuters on the CSX side. I was surprised at the variety of power on the Tri Rail trains, GP40', F40's DMU pretty colorful. Althogh I saw a couple of the FEC SD70's did not get a shot of one, lats of ex UP SD40's and a train with FEC Geeps.

I think the 715 FEC is hauling sand to the cement plants along the FEC line, cement plants are in Stuart FL and Ft Pierce FL. Most FEC trains are two miles long or less as most passing sidings(siding in Stuart FL 2.5 miles long) are just over two miles long.
