Front End Friday

Happy Front End Friday everyone! With a hectic workweek behind me, it's finally time to unwind in the Train Room. Today I'm running my two Lionel Legacy engines. On the outer mainline, my beloved Lionchief T1 Duplex is hauling the Broadway Limited (K-Line 15" Fleet of Modernism coaches).

On the inside track, my brand-new Legacy SW8 is pulling a mixed freight.

Both engines are geared differently so even at about the same speed setting the Duplex flies and the SW8 crawls. Time for a race!

Here's the obligatory video.

A pair of Weaver I-5' streamlined Hudson's meet on the bridge over the approach tracks to Cedar Hill Yard. The #1409 has a consist of post war streamlined coaches and a sleeper while the #1400 has a group of heavyweights including  a diner and an American Flyer coach. The RS-3 #535 heads out with a local peddler about the same time..

Caught up on two weeks worth of front ends.  Man all those "F" units and "E" are stunning.  What a great "canvas" cab units made for the railroads.

Someone on eBay has been selling a huge bunch of Marx H0 boxed sets, many near new. He said it was a large collection he bought. My buddy Bob and myself have bought quite a few.

Well,mits Thursday evening and a good friend brought three of his prized steam locomotives over to run on my layout, and they are great runners. One, a Lionel VL Hudson, another Sunset 3rd rail Sante Fe Texas Northern, another large Sunset 3rd rail steamer 4-10-2 with three chuffs per revolution, all amazing, we had a great train day. Happy Railroading Everyone

Atlas, SW-9, early model that has been upgraded to TMCC. 

One of the things I really miss are hiking and skiing trips to New Hampshire.  Between the pandemic and lack of snow, we have not been able to get up there for almost two years.  While up there, I always enjoyed getting photos of the many railroad related activities in the area.  Here are a few from years past.

Hi F.E.F. fans, well with Steve's Marx HO and UKE's Thomas and despite all of the beautiful scale locomotives (leapinlarry esp.) I guess I am OK with using one of my Marx trains for today.  OBTW for all you folks in the North, the bitter cold has finally reached Texas with temperatures never going above freezing both yesterday and so far today.  Anyway here is the Marx 995 sheet steel stamped locomotive (stamping the same as the 994) , actually an 0-4-0 but with leading and trailing trucks simulated in the stamping.  This locomotive was brought out in 1950 by Marx specifically to compete with the new Unique lines trains.  It was available through at least 1952 in both black and red as well as a full lithographed "Mickey Mouse" theme.

Here she is with her train of Marx 4 wheel 7" cars (also specifically manufactured in response to Unique Lines) in a set that was labeled ... "The Meteor".

Here she is with her long 7" type tender marked with the number "941" for reasons known only to Mr. Marx and confusing for all us late comer collectors as the locomotive designated product number was 994  / 995 although not printed anywhere on the locomotive, It was also available as a clockwork engine.

   Does this still count lol. We had new wheels put in on this engine. So I had to add to the plow to get it back to regs.

New and the old;

Another chilly, wintry Friday here in the Northeast so it's time to retreat to the Train Room. Today I've cleared out the main lines of the layout so the Big Steam can get some exercise.

On the inside track I have my B&M M1A Mountain-class leading a coal drag. It's an early MTH Railking Imperial engine with a very basic PS2 sound and command system but has been a very reliable runner.

On the outer line I've brought out one of the titans, my MTH American Legacy black 763e Hudson! It's a big scale locomotive with a tinplate tender, just like how many of the prewar Lionels were sold in the late 30s. It has a modern can motor, traction tires and a very heavy die-cast boiler so it has much better pulling power than the typical MTH tinplate engines.

Today the 763e is pulling my Williams NH heavyweight set with some K-Line "private varnish" on the tail end.

Love this set Nos. 49 and 50; they are my all time favorite MTH engines.  I spoke with Clyde at Stockyard Express the end of the week and this run did so well he will be doing D&TSL Nos. 47 and 48 so if you like them CALL, he's taking pre-orders for them asap.
