Howdy all,
Broke into jail again. (And, yes I’m a newbie ). Took apart a late 1940s 6220 switcher. Before I put the motor back on the truck, all parts on the motor and truck spun smoothly and freely. When I stick thE motor back on the truck, the wheels only roll backwards (reverse direction). They will not roll forward when I try to turn the wheels. However, when I spin the armature, the wheels move in both directions. What did I miss?

you assembled it incorrectly, probably left spacer washer out or 2 to washers on the same side!
If you have another engine take cover off and compare to this engine!

That was it! Thanks Alan. The result negates both my memory and the Greenberg Manual. Both don’t show washers. Either way, thanks for the in between the lines lesson of thinking outside of the box when issues arise. OGR rocks!

One practice you may want to consider is taking a few pictures of your project as you are disassembling. Also having a notebook where you can write down a few notes during the process will be helpful during the reassembly. Glad you got it sorted out and running on the rails again.
