Well I have dinner all set up Wednesday night and Thursday night. Breakfast is set Friday AM. What else is there for a good meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner in York?

Part of the answer may depend on where your lodging is if you may be staying outside of York.
For lunch, I'm generally not a believer in straying from the fairgrounds, takes too much time away from roaming the aisles. Others with local favorites may disagree there.

Lots of info in Clem's York Primer. If you aren't familiar with it, search for it and read it - many valuable insights.
Here's a place I've never seen recommended in a York writeup.
It's a bit of a splurge -- it's not a typical beer 'n' wings kind of setup -- but if you're traveling with your spouse and you'd like to give her an extra special treat for putting up with 28 hours of your trains over 3 days, there's the Accomac Inn at 6330 South River Drive, York, PA. It's about 15 miles from the fairgrounds, right on the Susquehanna river.
The menu can be seen here so you know what you're in for. It'll put a dent in your wallet, but among other things, the venison is killer.
Again, it's a splurge, but sometimes a splurge is a good thing.

P.S. For nights that you feel like getting pizza delivered to your hotel room, I'm partial to the Mamma's Pizza (i.e., the location on George St). Good NY-style crust. Apart from that, just read this forum and go to whatever place people are meeting for a burger and a beer.
Round the Clock Diner just off I83 on Arsennal Rd. Here is the menu. Great breakfast place.
Although I take my wife to "upscale" dining places, I'm just a "meat/gravy/mashed potatoes" guy. While alone at York, it's breakfast at Bob Evans, lunch at the Italian sausage stand at the fairgrounds, and dinner at the Lyndon Diner.

Arguably the best Italien in York - Bel Paese Italian Ristorante, 1202 Memory Lane Plaza in East York. One of the best "strip mall Italien" restaurants I've ever encountered!
Great food, excellent service and very reasonable prices.
Latuca's, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. The reason I diet for 3 months before York! Call now Vince! One of everything!
The pretzel stand in the Orange hall is pretty good for that mid day snack
Bob Evens is horrible.
Best place to eat in york? There is no best place as far as I know and I've been going since 1985. There are many decent places to eat around York, go to the one that you like or have been to before. They are mostly chain restaurants.
Your not going to york for the food but for the train meet. So have fun and enjoy it.
This trip is a special trip for me so I always treat myself to 1 fantastic meal while I'm there. So, I always go to Texas Roadhouse for filet mignon. I have NEVER had a bad steak there. Knock on wood. And service has always been great. Plus, I think the Texas Roadhouse in York is the best one anywhere. And, I've been to a lot of 'em.
Rick
I have NEVER had a bad steak there.
Other have and will not go back.
There is no such thing as good food in York
NOT Ruby Tuesdays! Worst service and food Ive ever experienced.
Isn't this where the DCS forum group meets on Thursday? The companionship out weighs the food.

Better than that place in downtown Sanford?
There isn't any good Italian food west of Paterson Sorry Don't go to York looking for food Go looking for trains and hanging out with a bunch of train geeks. Pack a picnic box your better off
There isn't any good Italian food west of Paterson
Not quite true. I've had a [very] few outstanding Italian meals between the longitude of Paterson and the Pacific Coast, plus I've had lousy pseudo-Italian food east of Paterson.

It's the OGR meeting, not DCS. I just get the salad bar.
There is a good seafood place between York and Hanover, Called Rt 30 Seafood There is also a German place in Abbotstown that looks good, but never been there
I agree too main chain restaurants in York.
Barry, sorry to hear that. I guess they saved the best for me. LOL I'm going at the end of this month (March) for the East Coast Large Scale Train Show. I'll let you know how it is.
Rick
Robert,

As good.

It all depends on how many vowels your last name has to be able to call Italian food outstanding. I never said everything east of Paterson is good. There are still Olive gardens in that geography. LOL
I am getting hungry!!!!
Even the salad bar at RT's sounds good right about now!
Barry, so let's skip Thursday@Tuesday and move thefestivities.
Last year was pretty bad. Somehow my order was the only one that did not make it to the kitchen (joke) and though I ordered the filet, I got sirloin. When I complained, was told "oh, they're the same price anyway."
Hoping this year is a little better.
Farmer Bill, if I recall, a few years ago weren't you preferring scrapple?
Blulinc, when my grandparents got off the boat from the mother country, they brought many vowels.
Scrapple is a breakfast treat and available at Alexander's Restaurant and Round the Clock Diner, among other fine establishments. They even serve it at IHOP near me in Virginia.
I ate at that German place west on 30 once, years ago, and was underwhelmed.
It can vary wildly at the same place, two nights in a row...and did a few years
ago when that place just across Arsenal from the Round The Clock first opened.
Really good first night...NOT the second night, have not been back. Also had
a lousy meal and service east on 30 in that shopping center that is north and
east of 30 and Memory Lane. Sorry I can't pull up the names. I certainly would like to hear about some others, even, if (a little) pricey.....I don't have to go far here to find the usual franchise joints. Who has a daily brunch during the week? Old Country
Buffet does there on Sat., but I want to be on the grounds then, usually, and they
aren't smart enough to take care of Thurs. and Fri. opportunity. I just have ice cream
on the grounds, eating a bigger breakfast and dinner, and spend my time walking (the ice cream off?)
And they have outstanding cheesesteaks! Rivals any I've had in the Philly area. It's a tradition for my wife and I to go there after the halls close on Saturday. Thanks to Vince's referral several years ago!
They're on Market Street down the street from the Fairground's Market St. exit.
At the last York, my wife and I found a real great restaurant which was off the beaten path in York. But I'm afraid to say what or where it is because it was so packed the last time we were there if any more of you guys were to find out about it I don't think we'd ever get a seat!
When I first spent time in SE Pa. beginning in 1970, I immediately encountered different regional tastes in dining. The now international fast food chain that I lived off of with my chicken feed budget in school in the midwest, could not be found, nor could any others. That has changed, of course, beginning about that time. I extended those trips then to explore New England, and was challenged to find familiar menu items, even for breakfast. Now there is a Cracker Barrel outside Sturbridge, which I understood was their farthest east restaurant. Of course, some don't like this
homogenation of dining across America, but when you travel, you sometimes want
comfort food, and don't want to have to guess when reading a menu. Other times,
I'd like to try a different place.

Like Ben, I am one who has yet to find a really good restaurant in York. Sure, lots of mom and pops where can find a good breakfast but lunch is iffy and dinner, well, you can fill up but no place that leaves a positive memorable impression.
When we travel we carry a copy of "Roadfood" by the Sterns. I have found quite a few memorable spots that are usually off the beaten path and you wouldn't likely find without this guide. They also have a website which besides input from the Sterns, others have contributed too. Checking the website for York, PA the closest place listed is actually 21 miles away. Doesn't say much for York itself.
Let me add one thing regarding Latucca's. Subs are OK, good tip Brian about the cheese steaks but if you plan to get lunch there call your order in. We have gone there, placed our order, and waited over an hour to get served while others come in, pick up their order and walked out. Service can leave a lot to be desired.
Pete
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Coombs yet.
Oooo... "Coombs"? Another secret place with no details or explanation. If it is good
it will be no secret to locals and already crowded...and I rarely, except the once cited
above, eat at the same place two days in a row, wanting variety, especially in breakfast, so would only get there once on a trip anyway.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Coombs yet.
That's because it's overpriced, tables are jammed together, has long wait times even with reservations, and the food is less than terrific. Steaks are much better at the Outback.

You forgot the quotation marks around the word, "treat" I'm sure it was a typo.
If you want some good food and good beer and don't mind a bit of a drive, the Garlic Poet is quite good. It's off 83 heading up to Harrisburg.

The Scrapple at Alexanders is thinner and more aimed at beginners, the Scrapple at the Round the Clock Diner is a manly slice of heaven.
Alexanders biggest plus is that it is very close to the York fairgrounds.
We found this place last year http://www.thepaddockonmarket.com/ and the food was great and different. Plus it was a short drive from the Courtyard that we stay at.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Coombs yet.
Darn!, Eddie found my secret, now we'll NEVER get a seat there!
BTW: The ROUND THE CLOCK DINER is pretty good too, and Eddie , you're right about BOB EVANS1

Pete, we usually get to Latucca's after 2pm on Saturday after the halls close. Maybe it's because it's after the lunch rush, but we always received our food quickly.
And we get a cheesesteak stromboli to go for dinner later on.
Gosh, guys and gals going to the York Eastern Meet primarily focused on eating, as if its the gourmet capital of the East. Forum Ogauge experts ready to thrash one another over their choices.
Dang, how many miles to Hooters?
Dewey:
Are you going? April will be the first time for me (spectator only). If you are going it will be great to meet up with you.
Joe
Hi Joe
Unfortunately I am not going. Although I am familar with the territory from past years visits to Carlisle and Hershey Auto Shows my health now prevents me from traveling.
Enjoy and spend a lot since you are not displaying.
I've had good meals at this place.......funny though, I've never eaten there when I'm at York.....but when I've been at Gettysburg.....when I'm at York, I concentrate on the trains and activites.......and, diner food is fine.
President Eisenhower used to go here for their chicken and waffles
Peter
I like the bar at Coombs (like lots of bars!). Will be there Thurs just before meet opens and on Sat ~1 pm before heading back down to D.C. for dinner at Pesce on P.
If your out by the Cho Cho Barn, Strasburg RR or the Pennsyslvania RR Museum. Issac's has great sandwiches. There is also one near the York Fairgrounds in a strIp mall. I believe it's a small chain in that area. Never been disappointed.
The Isaac's in Strasburg is right in the mall with the Choo Choo Barn and hobby shop,
on the way to Strasburg RR, Pa. RR Museum, and TCA HQ.
The one close to the fairgrounds is up that hill on the west side of York, just off
Carlisle Ave., on a street that connects with it opposite that esteemed? Bob Evans
that sits on the east side of Carlisle Ave. Gee, is that all there are?...there must be
something else....Gettysburg is too far to lunch on ice cream at Kilwin's every day...
I agree, We like Issac's for lunch. We always stop there when we go over to the outlets usually on Tuesday.
Peter,
I agree as regards Altland House. They cater the York DCS Use group Meetings at the Wyndham Gardens (was the Holiday Inn Holidome), which they also own.
I've eaten at both the Strasburg and the Isaac's near the Fairgrounds and would recommend them for lunch.
I can also recommend the Paddock Bar for dinner but it is crowded with locals on Friday nights.
Bill

The Garlic Poet is quite good (a little pricey), but they just opened a sister restaurant at the same location called the Grain+Verse Bottlehouse: http://www.grainandverse.com/ with different fare. They have about 250 different bottled beers if you like to explore. Down/across the street is John's Diner, Bob Evans and Pizza Hut. Reference 148 Sheraton Drive, New Cumberland, PA, 17070, I-83 Exit 40A Limekiln Rd.
A dining car is at the Red Caboose Motel in Strasburg. Breakfast is OK, but I have not tried other meals. Kids love it, but your wife may not.
+1 for Isaac's on Thursday nights, good grilled sandwiches and strawberry lemonade. Then we usually head back through Lancaster for Friday dinner.
I and my wife agree with Barry on Bella Piasa (sp?) .We also discovered a good
restaurant on top of a hill just up from the Mt Rose interchange? Nice menu, reasonable prices, and excellent view. Can't remember its name.

I must respectfully disagree. If you don't mind a 15-20 minute drive from the fairgrounds, try Mamma's which is just off the Loganville exit (#10) on I-83. Run by an Italian family and the food is excellent. I recommend the chicken parm or the penne with ricotta cheese. The strombolis and pizza are also excellent.
One thing is clear from all these posts: no one has anything good to say about Ruby Tuesday's. So why does the OGR group go there? We're so spread out that there's little chance to talk to all friends. Couldn't a room be obtained elsewhere?
Does anyone remember the AOL Viking club dinners? Maybe OGR should look into that hall. The food was fair but reasonable, you could talk to people and as an added bonus you could even set up a small train layout!

OK. You are now officially in charge of finding a better place. Please let us know of your progress.
Why do you think you are authorized to make commitments on behalf of the OGR group?
I put Joe in charge.
this is Italian food

if grandma didn't make it, it is just food. Gary, stop in Staten Island on your way there or back. you will thank me.
JohnS: Looks inviting! Unfortunately, Richmond Borough is a bit out of the way between York and Virginia. Of course, the problem with that Italian food is that after a week or two you're hungry again.
I know what you mean. it is sort of on the way for Gary though
Will have to check out the Garlic Poet since we are staying in that area. We have been to Johns Diner several times and always had a good meal.
Also been to Isaacs in York and in Strasburg and was disappointed both times. They could call it "so-so sandwich shop"
Scrapple will kill you ... and that's literally.
The Lancaster BrewPubs in Harrisburg and Lancaster are very good - if you travel that far from York.
Round the Clock - the pork schnitzel is simply unbeatable.
Our group goes to Bob Evans near the Fairgrounds at least twice each York - clean, very good food and fantastic staff. You guys who don't like "Bob Evans" must be going to a different one.

I love pork schnitzel. What do you order with it (do they have German potato salad)?. Best I've had was in Salzburg Austria.
I always eat breakfast at the Bob Evans near the fairgrounds. Two eggs over, hash browns, and link sausage. YUM!

Joe ... one beauty of Round the Clock is the number of sides they offer. So, you can order just about anything with the schnitzel. Potato salad is an option - though I'm not sure it's German P-S.
Yep ... the Bob Evans near the Fairgrounds is the one we go to. Always very, very good (remember, it's a coffee shop!). Not on the menu, but worth ordering: the BLT. They'll make it specially for a customer.
BTW, the pork schnitzel at Round the Clock is thin cut (best) and perfectly breaded.
Bob Evans is a coffee shop?
Clem
I miss Moser's!!
I've never been to York but from what I'm reading here if or when I do go I've decided the most important things to pack ....
a pound of salami .... a pound of capicola .... half a pound of mortadella .... a peperoni or two .... a hunk of good imported provolone .... a jar of black olives .... giardinere and a loaf of good French bread ...
I'll be eating in my room!!
I understand there is a gourmet restaurant/cafeteria located near the Red Hall, I believe it is called The House of Tomain. Has anyone experienced this feast for the senses? A friend went there once but I haven't seen him since in order to get a report regarding the food!

I'll be going there Thursday night for the first time. Friday, some of us who meet regularly are heading to Cheddars. This will also be a first. I made reservations for our group, and will be confirming tomorrow.

The BEST Ristorante Italiano outside of New York is in York. Victors off of Mt Rose on Ogantz st.

I am looking forward to dinning at the Hillside Cafe again. I had been meeting friends there since the mid nineties and did not think it would be rebuilt after their devastating fire in 2012. The family has built a new building and they opened their doors in December. It is a great place to meet because they have wonderful steaks as well as a very balanced menu so there is something there for all the different tastes.
It is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from the meet just off Exit 35 on !-83.
For our group, eating at the HillSide Cafe had become a part of the "York" experience and we are hoping to re-establish that tradition.
Happy railroading (and eating)

I’ll bet you mean The House of PTOMAINE spelled as in "Ptomaine Poisoning"!

Thanks for the heads-up! I didn't know they had re-opened.

I have been to the new Hillside twice both times coming home from the Scale show. Fist time was a Sat. over an hour wait at 5:30.. Last Sun, No wait.at 4:00. They do not take reservations any longer. Food was a lot better than before the fire.
Does anyone know the name of the large German restaurant on rt.30 between York and Gettysburg? If you do , how is it?
>>> Food was a lot better than before the fire.
Now it's well done?
I ate at that German restaurant once, SEVERAL years ago, and was underwhelmed...
think I had Wienerschnitzel, which is all that looked interesting on the menu, and
that is a problem I have had with so called German restaurants in this country. Have
had good food in Germany. Seems like every one here has that and little else. Not
sure that makes it "German". I do want to think somebody on another thread, or maybe this one?, who mentioned Dienner's, a buffet just east of Lancaster on 30
(Soudersburg?). I had breakfast there one day, and went back another for the evening
meal. These buffets are not for health nuts or people with medical advice about
shoveling in the groceries. I will try to get back to Dienner's again.
