Just my opinion but, I think that it depends on the product. Considering Ross is an advertiser in OGR, is an original charter OGR Forum sponsor, and has one of the best customer service records in the industry, I would opt for DIRECT PURCHASE! Sometimes price isn't everything.
I purchased mine at York at the Ross booth. price was a bit cheaper than list.

Wow Dale, quite a layout and quite a large room in your home. Nice benchwork and track plan. What I can see of it looks very interesting, not like the round and round one of mine (SIGH!!, if only I had a 747 hangar for a train room, what an empire I could build (but then I would still wish I had just one more foot to squeeze in that last switch and track....))

I buy straight from Ross and many times have paid full MSRP at my LHS

Well smart guy, I didn't say "all hobby supplies"! There are however a select few items I would, and have, purchase/purchased direct from the manufacturer.
And what about supporting the brick & mortar hobby shops? Sommerfelds is a good place to shop, good people there, and they will give you a good price on Ross, Lionel, MTH, etc.
