Layout rearrangement.

With engines moved to the new cabinet I now had room to move some of the DCC engines off the Seattle's incoming tracks.

Now only 1 of the 3 incoming tracks have engines on them.

One table got organized by railroad...

and the previously vacant table, also got engines by railroad.

Looks like a great show!!

That's a really nice cabinet for $25.

GN, UP GE #1 diesel steam turbine 2-C + C-2 imported by Alco.

Been wanting one of these for a long time as they don't 'show up' very often.

Couldn't find when it was made but guessing in the 80's.

GE only made 2 of them in the late 30's.  Tested by UP and then GN operated for a short period.

YUP, I'm the first to unwrap this engine.

Amazing that someone bought it but never 'opened it'!

Been sitting in the box for about 38 years!

Big surprise; no wheel wear!

Not going to find anything too much more unusual than this engine!

Chrome around the windows.  Will have to add 'window glazing'.

One can motor operates both trucks.

Guessing those are cooling vents for the turbine!

The lead trucks and driving trucks are mounted on a separate plate where the plate pivots on the bottom of the shell.

What it will 'look like'.  These were, recently, produced by Division Point and are in the $4,300 range.

Mine was much cheaper!

Beautiful model! If I remember correctly the vents are for the steam condenser. To increase water efficiency the units were equipped with steam condensers.

As trainmaster previously mentioned, the water is recycled.

The only difference that I see on the GN versus the UP is

GN has no raised silver strip along the sides.

Side vents move 'fore and aft'.

Have to drill out those dimples for lights.

A light goes in that big hole.

More lights on each side.

Just noticed more detail in the cockpit with the 'console controls'.

That large silver plate on each side of the nose is suppose to be lighted but that 'ain't happening'; beyond my 'skill set'.

These are all vintage metal, mostly Athearn, Varney, etc., freight cars.

Some had original boxes.

All metal superstructure with wood bases.

Nicely detailed from the 50's.

A lot of unusually labeled tank cars.

I really didn't 'need' them as I already have 7 trays of vintage metal and wood freight cars,

not counting the couple hundred, or so, that are, currently, on the layout,

and there is no room on the layout for them,

BUT, since Allen owned them, I figure I'll put them on a separate shelf for display purposes.

This morning I was running one of the passenger trains on the layout to 'reverse the cars'

and the train shorted at a turnout in the laundry room.

Turns out one of the 'switch point throw ties' broke so I had to make a new one,

drill and tap for screws, etc.

The old one ONLY lasted about 51 years; going back 3 layouts.

All better!

Wow!  That is certainly a well detailed layout.  Bob certainly is a capable builder and able to give a clinic on building structures.

It's always like a little treasure hunt finding all the named buildings & businesses.  Nice to see Bales Machine & Tool still there. Did you notice if Dad's businesses are on the new layout?

I took pictures of just about every building but there there was a large group of buildings on the layout that hadn't been 'located' yet on the layout plus there were a dozen more, or so, in 2 other locations plus Bob said he has given away a lot of them since his new layout isn't as large as his old layout.  He also had some sitting on end tables.

Thanks Sam! I have photos from before he moved, when he was open after the July 2018 Div. 7 meeting. Dad kept calling me over to "take a picture of this", "I need you to get me a picture of this building over here, and that one up on the top over there", etc. I even found a rare photo of that Sam Parfitt guy at a layout visit ;-)

One of the turnout linkages needed re-soldering.

Traction tire put 'back on'.  Put a little 'canopy glue' along the edges to help secure it.

Lucked out: Noticed the other side's valve gear was loose plus the 'pin' to secure it was on the bench!

Using the UP DD40AX to reverse some passenger cars and some roadbed needed adjusting where 2 different 'sub roadbeds' join.

Some problems with the front LED of the Digitrax throttles coming on indicating a loss of communications so I bought some new rechargeable batteries.

Just one observation car was not indicating it was in a block so I added an extra resister.

That didn't work so I adjusted the 'pot' to be more 'sensitive' to the lighted car....

that 'worked' at the block now shows red as occupied.

Updated since new conifers were 'planted' and functioning signaling system installed about 4 years ago as the signals changed from green to red as the train passes the signals. All the 'ugly' interiors of the mountains are present so a 'skip' can be done on those. The video is long at 23 minutes as the train travels about 950' which is longer than 3 football fields!
