Regarding: Ross club modular layout at Liberty center shopping center in Liberty township, Ohio

Curious as to the overall set up. Is the layout manned by members over the full hours of the Mall operation?  I know that some Malls open there doors several hours before to allow shop owners to prep for opening of business. Do they, the Club, leave their equipment at the Mall at closing time?

Were they invited to set up the layout or did the Club board approach the Mall management with the idea of having the layout as an attraction?

RAY

Ray,

Club members are there during the 'open hours' of the mall.

They are in 4 hour shifts and they bring their equipment with them and take it home after their shift.

I believe they asked the mall if they wanted the 'layout setup' and the mall was glad to have them.

The layout is next to 'seeing Santa' so it works out well.

PM'ed a few engines.

A scale 4-6-4 Hudson.

I purchased this engine new back in the 90's and the driver side rod snapped.

Williams scale Hudson 01

Found the small part on the layout.

Williams scale Hudson 02

This is, probably, not going to work but, first, I'm trying JB weld on the side rod.

I found no parts on the website.

The metal is 'cast metal' so no soldering.

Maybe I can use a thin sheet of brass, cut it to the same shape and JB weld the two parts together.

Williams scale Hudson 03

2035 2-6-4 defective drive unit so I purchased a used one on Ebay.

Lionel 2035 steam engine 20

Removed the main piston driver rod.

Lionel 2035 steam engine 21

One screw on top removed that secure the motor unit to the superstructure.

Lionel 2035 steam engine 22

Motor unit would only rotate along the front and would not 'come out' but I saw this screw and removed it.

The screw is about 2" long and secures the motor unit to the superstructure.

Lionel 2035 steam engine 23

Unsoldered the 2 wires that go to the light and smoke unit.

Lionel 2035 steam engine 24

Side rods moved from the 'old' to the 'replacement' motor unit.

Lionel 2035 steam engine 25

Soldered a longer wire to the two short wires for the light and smoke unit for 'ease of soldering'.

Lionel 2035 steam engine 26

Re-assembled.

Lionel 2035 steam engine 27

All 'better'.

Lots of PM this past week.

GN R-2 2-8-8-2 made by Tenshodo in the early 70's.

Engine stopped running.

Weird. The decoder lost its address.

GN R-2 2-8-8-2 69

Just re-loaded all data in the 'roster' back into the decoder.

GN R-2 2-8-8-2 70

All 'works' again.

GN R-2 2-8-8-2 71

Lots of lead in this engine at 2.25 pounds!

GN R-2 2-8-8-2 72

Yard test.

TCS 1517 decoder with headlights (engine/tender), marker lights, running board lights, cab light and fire box glow.

GN R-2 2-8-8-2 73

Back to the engine service facilities.

GN R-2 2-8-8-2 74

B&O EM-1 2-8-8-4 imported by Westside in 1979.

Electric motor operating but a bind in the drivers.

Front drivers binding but, not sure what I did, but they are OK now!

The valve gear connecting to the main driver fell off so that may have been the problem.

Also, I made adjustments to the valve gear to insure it didn't bind.

'Track test' without gear box to insure no binding.

B&O EM-1 2-8-8-4 westside second engine 63

All seems to be good now testing without the boiler attached.

B&O EM-1 2-8-8-4 westside second engine 64

Glad I have a 'connector' between the running gear and boiler for 'ease of PM'.

B&O EM-1 2-8-8-4 westside second engine 65

A lot of wires in there!

TCS 1517 decoder with headlights (engine/tender), marker lights (engine/tender), running board lights, cab light and fire box glow.

PRR DD-1 A-A box cab electric imported by Alco in 1974.

PRR DD-1 A-A units box cab electrics 17

Bought some inexpensive Digitrax decoder for this engine.

Surprised how cheap these are; 18 bucks versus the steam engine decoders at $150!

Of course the max amp on the Digitrax is only 1/2 an amp.

Usually, I use TCS KAM4 non sound decoders on electrics at 1 amp but this small electric with a can motor shouldn't pull many amps.

Electric engines don't make much noise so I just use 'non sound' decoders.

NYC T-3 electric Alco 09

The labels were missing so I made copies from pictures 'online', clear coated them and glued them to the boxes.

NYC Hudson 4-6-4 O-gauge needs more 'work' than I 'thought'!

Williams scale Hudson 04

The front and back drivers are 'stripped' at the axles.

Some JD weld should be able to secure the drivers to the axles.

I think I have an O gauge quartering jig.

Williams scale Hudson 05

The repaired side rod is pretty sturdy with the JB weld.

I'll add some more JB weld around the perimeter of the center hole.

Williams scale Hudson 06

Had to repair this plastic part on the 362 barrel loader as no one sells this part.

Some plastic and JB weld.

barrel loader 01

Not 'pretty' but 'functional'!

@RadCam posted:

Is the rocket model made by Atlas? I ask because it looks like a model of a Saturn 5.

The Atlas rocket is actually still in use, which is quite impressive for a design that dates back to the 1950's. It's right up there with the B-52 in longevity.

You're right, it is the Saturn 5.

The model is by Menards.

If it was to 'scale' it would be about 4' high instead of 8" but; it's the 'thought that counts'!

New delivery and PM engines and MOW car.

MP 4-8-4 2200 imported by PFM (Fujiyama model) in 1972.

MP 4-8-4 2200 Fujiyama 05

Unusual to have cab detail back in 1972.

Will add some red and white paint to dials and handles.

Impressive whoever painted the cab interior green as the cab is not removable so very hard to accomplish that.

MP 4-8-4 2200 Fujiyama 06

Whoever painted this engine did a very nice job which was the main reason I purchased this engine.

Marker lenses, red inside the bell, numbers on the 'number boards', headlight, 'keep off' sign and painted air hoses.

MP 4-8-4 2200 Fujiyama 07

Fireman's side.

Another reason for the purchase: lots of piping

All the piping around the smoke box painted black.

MP 4-8-4 2200 Fujiyama 08

Nicely done 'white walls' and 'running board'.

MP 4-8-4 2200 Fujiyama 09

All the cab nomenclature. Painted 'rain roof' over the windows.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 imported by Westside in 1980 which I painted, added headlight (engine/tender), marker lights , cab lights, fire box glow, running board lights and a TCS 1517 decoder.

PM:

Engine hesitates, sometimes, in forward and reverse and needs a 'nudge' to get it 'moving'.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 109

All drivers have a 'wire setup' versus individual springs on each driver axle so the drivers are 'equalized'.

Initially I thought that may be the problem.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 110

Disassembled.

When applying resistance to the drivers the universal would 'bind' as the 'T' end of the universal would almost come out of the slotted part of the universal.  The screw was loosened and the 'slotted part' was moved forward about a 3/32".

That fixed the 'bind'.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 111

The back gear box would move forward and backward when the motor was reversed.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 113

A piece of brass was cut to remedy the gear box movement.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 114

I was lucky that there was a screw on the gear box that I could 'use'.

The two side of the brass bracket rests against the frame.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 115

The universal was moving down and was touching the bottom of the frame as some of the paint was 'worn away'.

The new piece of brass also keeps the universal centered in that open hole.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 116

A test seems to have resolved all the problems.

Just used some alligator clips connected to the motor wires.....

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 117

and used an old 1972 PFM sound system to test the engine unit.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 118

Running board lights were 'blown' so new ones glued 'in place'.

The decoder doesn't looked 'smoked' and the 'smoke unit' isn't working so I got on BLI's website

and requested a new smoke unit and decoder.

Even though the engine functioned OK I have 2 'burned out' smoke units in the GN box so maybe the decoder is

'over loading' the smoke unit so I'll get new ones.

This GN MOW car derailed.

GN MOW 01

It had plastic wheels so I replaced them with Intermountain metal wheels.

Since the trucks are metal, some small pieces of electrical tape are put on the inside of the side frame

to prevent the insulated wheel from contacting the truck's side frame.

GN MOW 02

I prefer the old metal trucks over the new plastic ones as the 'old ones' have real springs.

Usually the plastic trucks allow 'easily rolling' cars but the Intermountain trucks have the same 'affect'

on the old 'all metal' trucks.

Been 'looking' for one of these for a few years.

I have one other custom brass model the N&W Y-3 2-8-8-2 with a removable roof.

I've got several Key and Tenshodo cab forwards that, also, have removable roofs.

Not as much 'piping' on the engineer's side.

I'm guessing a lot of the piping is on the fireman's side as he is the one who usually checks for any leaks along the 'running boards'.

Rolling thunder and more PM of the SP AC-1.

Rolling thunder by BLI.

This is a proprietary item that BLI produced a few years ago to produce the low 'sounds of an engine' as it 'passes'.

The BLI engines, also, must be Paragon 2 or later versions.

Joe brought his Rolling Thunder and we tried it on the layout but the 'chuffing' only sounds, at least to me, like a 'drum beat'.

I found some videos and their 'chuffing' sounds better.

I'm 'thinking' that the 'woofer' is the problem as we are not using BLI's specifically made 'woofer'?

We tried 2 different steam engines to eliminate one engine being a problem.

Interesting; we tried a diesel and the engine noise and horn could be heard in the 'woofer'!

video 1:

This sounds better.
'Click' to time 11:00 for 'demo'.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR875okRCr0

Video 2:

Another video can hear, also, the whistle at time 26:00
Joe's 'set up' for testing.

Rolling Thunder BLI 01

I 'googled' the Rolling Thunder and found that the range can be increased by changing some CV's.

They used the throttle to change the CV's but I found it much easier to use JMRA/Decoderpro to change the CV's.

The BLI red receiver is a decoder, just a stationary one.

Programming track.

Rolling Thunder BLI 02

I did a 'read' and it came up with 'rolling thunder'.

Rolling Thunder BLI 03

It has a default address of 1 so I 'left it as is'.

I would imagine that this address must remain 1 unless there is some updates that can be done to the engines decoder.

Rolling Thunder BLI 04

The CV's that were changed were labeled on the receiver with the old CV's labeled, also.

Rolling Thunder BLI 05

CV chart.

Rolling Thunder BLI 06

Not an engine but, out of curiosity, I pulled up the 'throttle'.

Rolling Thunder BLI 07

Now in my roster.

When we tested the system yesterday the range was only about 7' left and right of the receiver.

With the changes the range increased dramatically to about 20' left and right of the receiver.

I've posted a 'notify' on EBay so, if a BLI 'woofer' is for sale, Ebay will notify me, as I think that is what is needed.

If I get this 'rolling thunder' working for my steam engines

I only want a very short (7' each 'side') range to just occur when the train is going over my 7' long trestle.

It's too 'overpowering' to have on the entire layout;  Just having several 'sound' trains running at once on the layout can be overwhelming.

Rolling Thunder BLI 08

======================================

More PM on the SP AC-1 2-8-8-2.

I bypassed the decoder and just tested all the drivers to insure they ran 'freely' via a DC throttle.

I put some 'pressure' on the front and back drivers to insure no binding and all's 'good'.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 133

Back drivers with my new 'anti rocking' gear box brass piece.

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 134

I put the engine on the programming track and the engine moves 'freely' but no sound.

Initially the engine, also, wouldn't move and then I remembered I needed a jumper cable' from the tender shell to the base as the decoder is 'grounded' only to the shell.

I replaced the speaker but nada.

I, then, replaced the decoder and same results.

Not sure what's wrong; will have to let this 'rest' for awhile!

SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 Westside 135

Leaving the boiler only 'rest' on the drivers for 'ease of diagnostics'.

Post op PM.

DM&IR M-3 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone.

A MTH cast metal boiler and tender with functional smoke stack and whistle.

One of the operators selected this engine but the bell 'stayed on' plus no other sound functions worked but the engine responded to 'speed' commands.

I took the throttle battery 'out and back in' and, when that didn't 'work', I plugged the throttle into the command station but nada.

I noticed the operator must of 'pushed' one of the buttons as it has an unusual 'statement' which I don't remember.

I hit 'exit' and that cleared the 'statement' but, still, no sound functions.

Testing it this morning, it works fine.

I think the decoder may have gotten 'confused' and 'powering down and back up' the engine, probably, would have resolved it.

New delivery.

NYC 4-6-4 Hudson.

I purchased this one back around 2000, or so.

It served many 'hours' but, literally, fell apart.

One side rod broke in half and the other side has a slight bend in it plus two of the driver sets have one driver completely stripped off the axle.

There are no spare parts so I thought I'd try repairing it but, in the 'mean time' I put a 'notify' on EBAY for any that were for sale.

Williams scale Hudson 07

Williams scale Hudson 08

I really 'lucked out' as I obtained another engine for only $113 plus $40 for shipping.

I was surprised at how cheap it 'went for'.

I, probably, would have had to pay more than that EVEN if the parts were available!

Williams scale Hudson 09

Original packing and box plus shipping box.

Williams scale Hudson 10

In very good condition.

Williams scale Hudson 11

This one has a movable bell whereas my old one does not.

Williams scale Hudson 12

Drivers in good shape.

Williams scale Hudson 13

'Ditto' with the tender.

Williams scale Hudson 14

The new box has a different label....

Williams scale Hudson 15

versus the old engine.

Since the new one is numbered 5205 and the old one is #5207,

I'm guessing the 5205 came out first and the 5207 came out later; hence the cheaper bell put on the 5207.

Williams scale Hudson 16

The 'key point'; it also 'runs well'.

I looked down the smoke stack and it appears to have a 'smoke unit'.

I put some 'smoke fluid' in it but nada.

Williams scale Hudson 17

My trains that I had when I was very young (plus a few that I wanted but 'too rich' to obtain 'back then')!

New delivery.

Bayer Garrett 2-6-0 + 0-6-2 articulated engine.

This version was made for England.

The railroad is LMS: London, Midland and Scottish RW.

These were made, initially, by Hattons and then Heljan produced them.

I obtained this from Olivia's train shop in England.

They recommended DHL for shipping as they 'track' your package.

I purchased the engine on 1-15.  Neil, the owner, installed a sound decoder for me;

package mailed on 1-18 and arrived on 1-22.  Very fast delivery from across the 'pond'.

Bayer Garratt coupler install.

#5 Kadee couplers would not fit in the small coupler pocket on the Garratt but I found these in my 'stash'.

I had to 'file off' those two 'side nibs' plus make the width a little smaller to fit in the coupler pockets.

I really like those Beyer-Garratt engines, built in Manchester, England. Some quick research turned up the following statistics: Beyer-Garratt built 1,636 locomotives of this basic design, which were sold to 86 different railways in 48 countries (but none sold in North America). South Africa was the largest purchaser/operator of these engines.

B. Smith: thanks for the info.

PM the SP AC-1 2-8-8-2 (cont).

Video:

Still can 'hesitate' once in awhile when 'first starting'.

I think it's due to the 'equalized drivers' as they can move, easily, up and down and may put a 'slight bind' on the 'side rods'.

Yard test:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttFjtfOiEgE

Testing on the 'programming track' before assembly.

The sound was not working due to the connector and/or wires on the other side of the decoder (this decoder gets 2 connectors, one on each end).

I replace the one connector and all's 'good'.

Unfortunately, there's a small 'burn' spot on the back of the decoder which is where the sound is located.

The sound was 'muffled' but worked when a new decoder was used.

Never had this happen in the past where the sound was 'smoked'.

One more decoder to 'mail in'!

New delivery and PM the Garratt.

Forgive me for I have sinned: I bought a diesel and it's not even close to my 1938 'operating range'!

It has a tsunami sound decoder with lights and it only cost 25 bucks more than I pay for my TCS 1517 sound decoders!

And it came from Alaska and the seller had free shipping; plus it got here in 4 days (amazing: 6,900 miles)!

Purchased it since it's classified as 'iconic' since it's the largest diesel made.

New delivery.

Something different: a new cabinet!

I was at St. Paul's thrift shop and they had a really nice glass and mirror cabinet.

Can't beat the price at 20 bucks  (I gave them 25).

It was perfect to get all these DC engines into a 'dust free' location.

GNRW 15

It took awhile to find a spot for it plus I had to clear out a lot of 'stuff' so it would fit in this location.

It's suppose to be a wall cabinet but it weighs a 'ton' with all that glass and REAL wood

so I just put it on the floor.

After I got home I had my 'doubts' if I made a mistake since it is so heavy.

I was able to 'walk' it up the 2 steps from the garage to the hall way

but 'no way' was I going to be able to get it down the basement steps 'on my own'.

Got my neighbor to help.  Him at the top and me at the bottom.

Used a large furniture strap so he could control the descent while I guided it.

I took the glass doors off to make it lighter plus 'some place to grab'.

It has 2 puck lights. I bought a couple 40W LED's for it.
