Hello all,

I have some PS1 and PS2 5V engines that use the MTH 9V style battery. I want to buy some new rechargeable batteries and heard the harbor freight NIMHs are good. Will this one work good?

I thought I would stock up on them because of the sale price and order a charger they have too since some of the engines don't have external chargers. This info is greatly appreciated, Thanks

Just for a test, try running those engines in conventional and you'll see how good those batteries are after setting for 2 years and a 30 second charge.

In command, as long as you have no track problems, the engines will actually run without a battery once added into your remote when the battery was fine. You only need the battery to save setting in the PS2 boards and to keep the engine from dropping into neutral from a momentary lose of track power.

Anything Branded "Thunderbolt Magnum" has got to be OK in my book!

I only run conventional.

They must be making batteries better than any that I've had in the past.

Well, not one, I followed the script that was posted previously for the 9V with four 3.3F 2.7V supercaps with zener diodes to equalize the voltages during charge.  This is the configuration.  I'm going to do some bench testing charging and discharging to see how this works out.

Here's one that has a nominal voltage of 8.4 volts and is priced at $5.

Tenergy 9V 200mAh Low Self-Discharge NiMH Rechargeable Battery

I'd think these would be a better choice for something that is going to set on the shelf for a year or two.

John,
I don't see the 8.4v listed on the product page;http://www.amazon.com/Tenergy-Centura-Self-Discharge-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/B003QUNYQI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385242145&sr=8-1&keywords=9v+tenergy+batteries  which brings me to the question that I was try to answer when I started this search. If a battery is truly 9V instead of 8.4 V will that hurt the MTH engines?
