Since the current hardware platform has so many obsolet parts and is difficult to build Lione will be upgrading the Legacy electronics to match those in the Cab1L but with enanced full Legacy features. This change will also make the product easier to build and also help eliminate some of the issues with the current electronic platform.

I wonder if Lionel will offer hardware upgrades via a recall ala the version 1.0 recall. Also if they don't include Gorilla glass in the new updated product they need their collective heads examined. My $29.95 Keyocera flip phone has Gorilla glass and it is impossible to break it.

Lionel will most likely not recall the older Legacy Systems.  Why would they?  Its all going to work the same and if you send it in for repair, it will most likely get replaced free of charge.

Second the gorilla glass, I've had my 2 Legacy systems since day 1 and they have been problem free. Maybe I'm the exception. I'm sure that would be an expensive addition at the quantity that Lionel would need vs the quantity that Keyocera needs.

Why is there a need for Gorilla glass? I've been using my CAB-2 for 2 years now without any problems. Unless you seriously abuse the unit, or bounce it off of a stone floor, I can't see how anyone could damage the glass. Mine does have the clear plastic film that it came with still in place too. (It saves the glass from getting dirty. )

There is no more reason to "recall" old 990/993 sets than there would have been for MTH to "recall" every previous version of the TIU every time they made an incremental enhancement to it.

Products evolve.  Unless the old one had a flaw that was going to cause it to stop functioning or destroy itself or the items you control with it, it's yours.  (so Lionel did do a mea culpa on the very early units and ask users to return when there was an issue regarding doing the upgrades)

Feel free to buy an upgraded unit as a spare if it's that much of a benefit in your eyes.

posed by gunrunnerjohn, I've yet to see a broken glass on the keyboard or the display, either mine or at our club.  I know some of them have been dropped more than once...                                        what about if you use it a lot will the screen fade or be black where finger is at a lot ??           - matt
