Have A CAB-1L Puzzle*SOLVED

After reading George Brown's review in Run 266, a few weeks ago purchased a Legacy CAB-1L/Base-1L Command Set (6-37147) from local toy train shop.  Last week my long awaited NS-NKP Heritage ES44 unit arrived.  I tested this engine and set new ID with this command set at home.  Saturday (2/22/2014) I took the ES44 and 765 Berk to the local toy train shop to run on the display layout.  The layout is Legacy equipped but intended to use my CAB-1L remote.  The shop's CAB-2 displayed it was on channel 1 just as my CAB-1L was suppose to be.  My CAB-1L could not/would not communicate with the Legacy Base.  So I then went trough the processes of resetting my CAB-1L to ALL nine channels.  But each time the CAB-1L confirmed channel set BUT with NO confirmation (three beeps) that there was an active BASE.  

 

End up running with shop's CAB-2.

 

When home reset CAB-1L to channel 1 with BASE-1l receiving "one beep: confirmation and BASE-1l was responding to CAB-1L commands.

 

Any ideas why the CAB-1L and Legacy BASE would not communicate?

Roy:  I thought about that.  The layout is only 8 X 12 I initially stood on the opposite side from BASE.  So I move standing right over the BASE trying to reset to all 9 channels, no joy.

 

Nicole: You maybe on to something.  Was wondering about the rev versions but do not recall reading anything about it.  Also do not recall the rev displayed on CAB-2. Hopefully someone can confirm that possibility.

Being the Legacy base stores the engine's setup in it I think you may have to program the engines ID and Legacy/tmcc and sound data into it so it knows what the engine is. I believe the cab1L works just like the cab1 does with the setup stored in the engine but the cab2 needs it in the base as well. Add the engine to the display layouts base and it should work.

If this be the case why then did the Berk and ES44 run with the CAB-2 since neither engine's info had been added.  And if running the engines with the CAB-2 added the info, then the info would have been there to run with the CAB-1L.

Nicole, DING-DING-DING, you win.  Your recollection is correct.  I do not recall seeing anything like this.  It is not addressed in the manual and/or Brown's review, unless I overlooked.

"The Cab-1-l will only communicate with bases that have V1.3 or higher."

Only if it's something they wanted.  They aren't missing anything if they don't want/need it.  Why mess with something that works fine for their use.  Now that the OP has found that the Cab1-L doesn't work, the shop will upgrade, maybe.
