This will be my first trip to York.  Its been on my "bucket list" for years. My wife suggested to me that this is the year to do it.  I will be travelling with one of my train buddies who has been there many times. One of the primary reasons I want to go is to meet some of the vendors I have dealt with over the years and as many of the folks that I have "met" here and on the CTT forum as I can.  How many of you are planning to go to York?

I will not be there.  However, I can't wait to hear the reports about York from a tinplate perspective (and from first-timers, Greg J. and Steve).  There are a lot of grumpy dudes in my local Lionel club who are really down on York (prices).  I'd like to hear some different opinions.  Or at least opinions from different people.  Have fun!

Wellllllll....as someone who has been going York since 1978 I guess I would say that the G.D. (grumpy dudes) crowd is just one part of the distribution of people and opinions one can find at/about York.  The problem you have with that subset of the York attendees population is that complainers are far more likely to offer an opinion than individuals who are not.  For me, York has always been fun.  There are aspects of the meet I don't care for but these are far outweighed by other aspects which I do enjoy.

Over the years I've had a number of very memorable experiences - here's one.  Many years ago I discovered that a co-worker had relatives living in York.  He was interested in trains but had never heard of TCA nor been aware of the meet.  He was into post-war Lionel and had been searching high and low for a brand new #356 operating freight station.  He was convinced they were impossible to find.

I assured him he would find dozens at York.  He was visiting his relatives that weekend so I picked him up at their place and we headed over to the fairgrounds. We went in, registered, waited, and when the starting pistol was fired went immediately into Blue hall.  Sitting on the second table in from the door was a new boxed #356 for $40 (back then this was a lot more than the going price). He grinned, reached for his wallet, and I stopped him.  I told him the price was way out of line and there would be others for less.  Reluctantly he put away his wallet and we walked maybe 50 feet further and there was another one - new, boxed - $30 dollars - again, I told him to wait and we did so.  Another 60 feet or so and we found a 3rd - same condition $22.50.  Again I told him to wait.  Again he put away his wallet, looked wistfully at the $22.50 and with some hesitation continued to follow me.

We reached the end of the first row and there was another one - same condition - $15.  Before I could say anything, he grabbed his wallet, turned to me, and in a loud voice proclaimed, "I don't care if there is a cheaper one in this meet - I can't take it any more! I'm buying this one RIGHT NOW!"  The table owner was somewhat taken aback at the outburst but the the $15 was offered and accepted and we walked out of Blue Hall with his first purchase of the day.

I hope to be there on Thursday at the opening bell. I look forward to meeting all of you as I readily follow and enjoy all of your posts on TinPlate items .

I am not a grizzled veteran ,as I have only been attending since 2000 . My observations are that you will find all kinds of tin plate items in every hall at the meet . The Red , Blue and Silver halls seem to hold the most , but there are no great concentrations in any one place .

I do not know what your travel plans are , but if you are arriving earlier in the week , then by all means you should try to get to the "bandit" meets at the Wyndham Gardens or the Days Inn . I can only speak for the Wyndham , but I found large concentrations of  pre-war Standard or O-gauge in the inside hall .These meets run from Monday to Wednesday before the main event .

The other advise that I can give you is to wear the most comfortable shoes that you own and bring lots of money .   Hope that I run into all of you at the meet . Jim

Going with my brother - first time for both of us.  Any advice for tinplaters?

See Summerdale Junction’s answer above, I have heard good things about the Wyndham as well.  As far as historical stuff, you can always check out the TCA museum in nearby Strasburg.  If you go on Wednesday they may be having a yard sale again- I was lucky enough to snag a decent 249e there a couple years ago.

Edit- I just called the museum, they are having another “de-ascension” sale on the open house day.  No telling what they will be offloading though.

Guess what arrived last week?

NationWideLines and I are travelling to York together.  We are driving out and leaving next Friday. I am looking forward to a week of toy train related activities. Talk about feeling like a little kid again!  I hope to meet many of you folks at York.  Its good to see that many familiar names are making their first trips to York too.  I might be looking at as many name tags as I am trains.  I have no specific plans for times and places to meet folks yet.  If you recognize me or my name tag please say hello.
