Picked up my first MTH engine with smoke, and wow, you all aren't kidding when you say they put out a lot! But the box it came in doesn't seem to match. How can I tell which model number it is exactly? It's a Union Pacific Baldwin AS-616, but I don't have a full DCS system yet, so I can't figure out if it's Proto 1 or 2, and it seems like MTH has made a lot of different versions of that engine.

A PS 1 engine, in conventional, starts off with a couple of clanks. A PS2 engine starts up with engine sounds. Usually there is a small PS2 sticker on the belly of the engine.

This is probably the fastest/easiest way to tell.
Road number is 1260 and I get two clanks on startup - looks like it's a PS-1. Well, at least it smokes a lot!
Does it run? Normally it is 2 dings at start up. Clanks can mean a software conflict. Best to ensure a new charged 8.4V battery installed and follow the directions for start up and running if you have them. If not they can be downloaded from MTH Website. G

The "Add a Cab Number" feature would have also been useful in this case.
