Alex, this is really impressive!!!!

I have been trying to figure out how get my Lionel 4-6-0 and 2-8-0 engines to give more than 1 chuff/revolution without ripping all the electronics out and installing a fan unit. Problem is, the chuff signal/smoke piston actuator arm is triggered by the right side drive rod (hence 1 chuff/revolution), instead of an axle mounted cam.

Has anyone solved this problem?

Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hi Britrailer,

I think the solution for your engine's is, you need a reed switch that will bypass that the trigger arm. This will net you 4 chuffs per revolution. I will post a how to if you need me to do so.

Thanks,Alex

The reed switch will take care of sound production but the smoke piston will continue to operate at 1 chuff/revolution - or am I missing something?

A "how to" would be very useful.

Hi Britrailer

I'm not sure about the smoke piston, Lets do this. Give me the Lionel 6 digit item numbers and I will look up the parts diagram, to get a better idea. I will post a how to in little later on tonight

Hi Britrailer,

I took a close look at the parts for both of these engines, I don't see a way to make the smoke units puff 4 times. The only solution is the reed switch for the chuffs, and maybe a fan driven smoke unit upgrade. I know you didn't want to do this, but I think it's the only way.

Thanks, Alex

Thanks Alex,

I was afraid of that - there is no room for a fan unit without ripping out the Lionel electronics.

I was really inspired by your  Hudson  modification, so I've decided to try a JB Weld project of my own.

I plan to add another activator to the left connector rod so the chuff/smoke piston lever fires twice/revolution.

Thanks for your help.

Frank
