Hey Folks,

Powered up my track yesterday and one of my legacy locomotives started blowing it's horn continually. I was not able to control the locomotive with the cab 2 remote. I tried resetting to factory settings - issue still was occurring. Tried re-programming it using the program module. Still no change.

Only recent change made to the locomotive is the installation of a battery. Even with removing it, the same issue still persists.

Any thoughts what might be going on? What recommendations do you have?

Thanks,

Jeff

base and remote are powered on before the track. To what red light blinking are you referring? All of my other legacy locomotives run fine, by the way.

The red LED below the cradle where the Cab2 sits.  When that engine is addresses is the base receiving any commands from the Cab2?  Just trying to rule out any weirdness from the Cab2 or Base.

red light blinks when I attempt to send commands to the locomotive - which aren't recognized. For the other legacy locomotives, the red light also blinks in the same manner - but here, the commands are recognized.

About the locomotive in question, when I initially power it on, I get one blast from the horn. A few seconds later, it starts sounding the horn 2 blasts, followed by a pause, then 2 blasts again. That pattern continues. Also, the locomotive is putting out a lot of smoke from the smokestack. Not smoke indicating something is burning. It's burning the smoke fluid - but seems like a lot.

That's likely a shorted wire that has the RCMC in distress.  Uncommanded smoke is another red flag.

I’m not a trained Lionel technician, however, if it’s warranty, I would triple pack the diesel and get an RA from Lionel. Yes, have them make it right.  I see you reside in Pennsylvania, you might have Lionel Repair Centers, we Do Not have a Repair Center here in the Nashville Tennessee area, and we have a New Lionel Train Store in Nashville. It doesn’t make sense. Good Luck. Also, how do you power your layout?
If you’re using TPC’s or 360 watt/180 watt PowerMaster, possibly you haven’t fully powered them up. Just an idea. Happy Railroading Everyone

It's way past warranty, so that's not an option.

RCMC? What's that?

Sounds like this needs to be repaired? Any recommendations on who can do that repair? I know that Lionel does not do repairs.

Check with Alex Malliae @Alex M, I think he still does repairs.

I have experienced a similar issue.  I did the following:

Power off track.

Unplug Legacy base.   Wait a few minutes.  +

Put the locomotive in program mode and put it on the track.  Plug in the legacy base and wait for the lights.  Power up the track and program the locomotive.

Power off the track.  Put locomotive program mode and power up the track.

This worked for my locomotive.

I have 180 watt power masters - 8 in all. Enough power. It's never been an issue before either.

I will reach out to Alex.

Lastly, RixTrack - when you say "power up the track and program the locomotive" - do you mean use the program module that came with the locomotive?

Also, a bit confused when you say "Power off the track. Put locomotive program mode and power up the track". Not sure what you mean here. Please explain.

Thanks,

Jeff
